The Fisher Price Ocean Wonders kick and crawl aquarium gym is a nice addition to the Ocean Wonders line. The same brightly colored and happy sea creatures make an appearance on this play mat/gym/tunnel. When it is mat time, the two soft toy bars dangle toys that baby can kick and bat at. The soft fabric is fun to touch and has plenty to look at. One of the dangling fish has a spinner, while the other plays quick tunes that aren't overly loud. Baby will enjoy kicking the little beach ball to hear it rattle. Convert to tummy-time mode so baby can strengthen their core and help their EQ with the mirror and reactive toys. Once baby is crawling, convert the gym to the tunnel for some aquatic peek-a-boo. You can still attach the toys, but the fun to be had is crawling in and out or peering through the mesh sides. We purchased this when we needed a toy arch for our 2 month old to look at and grab at while he lies down on his back. He is now over 4 months old and he still loves it!

We chose this over the many more expensive "activity mats" because we wanted something that fits into a pack-n-play, and this one is narrower than the others. (Our baby shares the house with a puppy, so sometimes we need to get him up off the floor.) But what we love most about this toy is that it isn't permanently connected to the mat like all of the others are! I suppose you can connect it, but you don't need to. Instead, you just bend the soft bars until they stay in the arch you want (while connected only to the 2 plastic "feet") and place it over the baby while he's lying down on the floor. We love this feature - it means we can put the arch over him after he's already happily lying down somewhere AND we can put this up on the bed, into the crib, into the pack-n-play, etc. Also, you can make the bars hang lower or higher depending on how far baby can reach as he gets older - and how much you want to challenge him to get his hands on the toys!

Notes:
1) Ours does NOT have metal bars like another reviewer noted - there appear to be a few versions of this same product? In any case, the mat is not important when you use this like we do.
2) When not using the mat, you do have to keep bending the soft bars to keep them arched, but that takes about 2 seconds each time you put it down.
3) I have not yet tried putting this into its tunnel form. Whether or not that works, it does work brilliantly in the toy arch / activity mat form.

Our three month old just loves this! She gets so excited when we put her in it. She especially loves to kick the large ball and is now starting to try and touch the other toys dangling closer to her face.

Pros:
* Since you just have to lay the baby down, we could use this very early on unlike most other toys.
* One of the few things where the baby is not strapped up, so she loves it even more.
* Vibrant colors, nice sounds. Lots of stimulation for her.
* Easy to fold and put on the side when not in use.
* Great way for the baby to get her exercise.
* Cheaper than other play gyms we saw.

Cons:
* After 15-20 mintues, she gets bored! But I dont think babies are supposed to have much of an attention span anyway.

We have both versions of this toy, the one with the octopus that makes noise (at our house) and this one (at Grandma's). This one is harder to activate the sound than with the octopus, so it didn't keep her attention as long as the older version. The octopus has a ball that would roll to make sound- something an infant on his or her back could bat at and do. This version has a fish with a button that needs to be pressed. When my daughter was 5 months and was batting things, she would bat the octopus for 20 minutes at a shot and make the music go off. She could never even reach the button on this version, much less activate it, and so she wouldn't spend nearly as long with this version. As any parent knows, keeping a 5 month old occupied for 20 minutes is a very precious thing. I was able to do an entire load of dishes while watching her have fun.Also, the older version had two plastic jingle bells int he kick ball, whereas this version only has one. This one has big plastic fish which are heavier than the older version. It would be harder to take these fish off and a child could get injured if the fish were pulled off with enough force. My daughter loves to pull off the older small plastic fish from the previous version and they double as teethers, as they are so thin. She can get these fish off too, but then she can't chew on them. We've had both versions since she was born and she still plays with it in crawl mode. This has been a great toy that has kept her entertained for over a year. No other toy has grown with her like that. If you can find the older version, buy it instead.
