5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Basketball Game You Can Buy, November 25, 2005
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
NBA 2K6. There's only one word to describe it, and that is BRILLIANT. It's like an NBA/gamer fan's dream come true. NBA Live games have always dominated when it came to NBA games season after season, but it's only the truth when I say that 2K6 knocks NBA Live 06 right out the box. 2K6 has done a nice step up from last year's game. Of course, the modes, graphics, gameplay, soundtrack, and everything else that makes an NBA game great are perfected here in the most realistic basketball game on the market.

The gameplay is tremendous. For the first time in a basketball game, your teammates on the courts will actually jump for a rebound, instead of standing around like idiots. When was the last time THAT happened in NBA Live? So you actually get a little help with rebounding from your other guys, instead of you doing all the work on the boards. Another thing is the right analog stick to be used for shooting. It might take a veteran NBA gamer to get used to this, cause in most games the right stick is used to juke and spin. The left analog is used to shake defenders in this game. Since it is also used to simply move your player around, it will take some getting used to, but after you do it's not a problem at all. The right analog stick is also used to shoot free throws. You have to time it just right to make the shot. You pull the stick down, and hold it as long as you think you should and then let go to shoot. That may be weird as well, but you learn to let the stick go at the right time the more you play.

24/7 mode is brought back once again. As most know, this is where you create your own streetballer and go through streetgames to unlock new gear and get players phone numbers so you can use them as teammates with 2-on-2 games. When you complete all the games at one court you play a superstar to be the king of the court. When you get enough hype, certain celebrities will call you out. 2 of them are Flava Flav and my man Joe Budden (when's the album droppin Joey?). This is a pretty fun mode when you get into it. The Association mode is kinda the same as a normal Franchise mode. You pick a GM and take a team through seasons. In the season you can set up practices, do player development drills (which you perform yourself with a player), and all the normal stuff like trade and release players. Both modes are pretty cool.

Certain in-game things are great as well. Before the game starts, they'll pick 2 players to watch for and you see them warming up (which has been on past 2K games). At the end of the 1st quarter, they pick a standout player. At halftime, you see a standout player and his stats and highlights, and also an "Around the Cooler Update" which is pretty cool. Most of the commentary is not repetitive for once, and they actually say things relevant to the game. You're never really bored when playing a game. Also, if you're beating a team pretty badly by the end of the 3rd, your coach will automatically put bench players in so the starts can get a breather. I think that's tight because most other NBA games, when you're killing a team, will not substitute starters even though you're gonna win either way. It adds to the realistic feel. One more thing is that when you're playing against Shaq and the Heat, they'll depend heavily on Shaq getting points in the paint, just like in real life. Definitely something that adds to the game.

Also, the great graphics, killer soundtrack (with artists like Jean Grae, RJD2, Zion 1 and others), and the Crib are great extra additions. Just more reasons to buy this game over any other basketball game. You can't forget about the price either. 40 dollars to NBA Live's 50? And this game is better? You can't beat that, no way. So if you're a gamer and an NBA fan, this is the game you need to pick up. You won't be dissapointed at all. Phoenix to take 05-06.

5.0 out of 5 stars much better than LIve, October 17, 2005
By Rob_tattoo (who cares) - See all my reviews
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I played Live 06 for about 2 wks b4 getting sick of it. I traded it in for this game, and I definately enjoy this game better. It's much, much more realistic in terms of actual ability and skill than 06. For example: In this game, even if you contest guys like Ray Allen or Peja, they will hit around 75% of their shots. In LIve, even if you contest guys like Derek Fisher and, no joke, Fred Hoiberg, they will score at least 30 every game. NO JOKE!! The actual gameplay is more realistic than Live, as player movement and crowd and cut scenes are better and generally life like. The EBC player you create would be better if they didn't start him off with little to no skill. I mean, even the worst in the NBA have at least 1 definite skill. But besides that, and a soundtrack that sucks a$$, this is a great game. I'm glad I got it, and all I had to do was trade in Live for it.

3.0 out of 5 stars I dunno guys... , June 18, 2006
By Kevin Rienecker "Kev" (Portland, OR USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
After playing the big three b-ball games for '06 (NBA Live, NBA 2K6, and NBA '06: The Life), and reading the reviews posted here for each, I'm still not convinced about much of anything, other than the makers of these games got a bunch of our hard-earned dollars for giving us very little as far as quality gaming. To wit:

1. NBA Live '06 - This series should be fantastic, but seems to keep taking major steps backwards with every new release. Horrible graphics, annoying bugs (crash! crash! crash!), inferior gameplay and nothing new under the sun. Heck, instead of extra's like 2K6's street ball, all we've got included here is the lame 'retro' Live version from, what? ten years ago? C'mon. Is anybody even going to play this? Compare EA's NBA franchise with their innovative and exciting Madden series... Not even close. I know pro football brings in the big bucks, and the NBA is barely a close second, but...maybe EA needs to switch their development teams around for next years installments...

2. NBA '06: The Life - Ugh. Nice idea, absolutely horrible, awful, crappy execution. Everything other than the premise is garbage. Speaking of... instead of buying this stinker, I should've just tossed my money in the garbage. I can't even trade it in - none of the secondhand dealers around PDX want to take it.

3. NBA 2K6: Now here, I had hope. The game includes pretty much all the nifty stuff I want out of a basketball sim, but the overall package is still somewhat lacking. The interface is NOT very user friendly, and the overall graphics look like they were lifted from five-year old product. I can create a player, but how do I get that player onto a roster? No clue. The menu doesn't give me a hint, I've pressed every button I can think of, with no results, and the 'instruction' book is no help here. And why, once I create a player (from the roster portion of the main menu), can't I use that player in the 24/7 section of the game? Why do I have to spend more time doing it all over again? And sorry guys, but the player graphics in the game are just okay (the players in the cutaways look like they're made out of rubber, and the detail in the actual games is lousy - the courts in NBA Live are much more realistic, although the fans here perform like, well, fans -- especially during the cut sequences after a ref's whistle and a stop in play... they celebrate with high five's, boo bad calls, etc. The courts and menu graphics, however, look like something from, well a game from five or six years ago. And the actual basketball..., even though the play is a bit more realistic than NBA Live's, it's still only adequate, and using the right joystick for shot control is worse than making a guess.

HOWEVER... At twenty bucks, it's the cheapest of the bunch, so I didn't feel like I was investing in a fake diamond mine in Africa. There's so many nifty options to keep this game fresh, with the deep sim-franchise mode and the 24/7 streetball mode, the average gamer should be happy just playing ball, and the rest of us who've played our fair share of b-ball can keep some interest after dunking our way through a couple seasons. I like that there are stats like crazy, that there's total control and in-depth franchise simulation right down to the last details (like creating your franchise's GM, building a custom franchise, or designing your players shoes), and that the computer controlled players actually DO something in games and play like their real-life counterparts (the big men claim rebounds!) I love that I can tie up the opposing teams ball-handler, and the ref's actually call jump balls... Although I can win a tip, but not claim the ball after...?!

The commentary may be the best ever in a b-ball sim (do whatever you need to keep Kenny Smith on board this project) and is rarely repetitive. I like the replay and player cutaways during the game, and crazy enough, I've been missing having an actual halftime show (in NBA Live), instead of just getting a menu with stats (remember when EA used real dancer photo's during halftime? Liked that a lot, but guess I'll take the silly animated cheerleaders here instead).

All in all, I'd say this is a toss up between the two big boys. Since I've played the NBA Live franchise for so long, I'd hope to see EA take a lesson from 2K6, and make the jump to this level of gaming simulation, and then a step or two further. Or on the flip side -- for 2K6 to incorporate the stuff EA does right and improve on it. THEN maybe we'll finally have a basketball simulation worth the twenty, or thirty, or fifty bucks we fans keep shelling out year after year...
