The well-known English Christmas carol, The Holly and the Ivy, forms the basis for this holiday pattern designed by Portmeirion second-generation artist, Anwyl Cooper-Willis. Red berries enliven the glossy dark green leaves of holly and ivy, while phrases from the carol flow in script against the white background. The result is a hand-decorated, antique look that is both traditional and festive. A great gift for a couple or individual beginning to collect this enduring pattern, the four place settings in this 17-piece set are each comprised of a dinner plate, salad plate, and cereal bowl. Also included are four tall 16-ounce high-ball glasses, ideal for iced tea, water, or cocktails, and a 10-inch round serving bowl for yams, garlic mashed potatoes, and more.

First introduced in 1996, Holly & Ivy is already a Portmeirion classic. Made in England of exceptionally durable earthenware, the dinnerware can go from freezer to table by way of the oven and microwave. Since rapid temperature changes are best avoided, a plate or bowl taken out of the freezer should be put in a cool oven and slowly warmed to a maximum of 340 degrees F. My husband is British and he had a few pieces of Portmeirion when we met. Over 10 years time, I have become increasingly impressed with the VERY HIGH QUALITY and EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE of these pieces. They stand up to daily dishwasher and microwave use, as well as wear and tear. Our original pieces still look as good as brand new.

By contrast, a set of dinnerware that we purchased in a major US chain store was advertised as dw/mw safe, but shattered in the microwave if left in longer than 50 seconds on any setting. We bought service for 12 and lost half of it within 5 years, most of it within 2 months. Also, the chain discontinued the product, but refused to address our loss in any way.

Portmeirion is an investment. You will love it's appearance, it's versatility and it's durability. It will become part of your legacy. Additionally, the patterns are so diverse and so replete with accessory pieces that you will never lack for gift ideas once you start a loved one on a pattern.

The Holly & the Ivy has become our new winter pattern. We started with a few serving pieces, then expanded by watching for sale prices. Amazon runs fantastic promotions on Portmeirion periodically, so watch and learn, then buy when the price is right! Enjoy!

I ordered this item as a Christmas gift for my wife. It was advertised as a service for four. However, when the package arrived there were only enough dinner plates for three. Another case of needing to be a lawyer to read the fine print of an item for sale or when there is a problem.
