Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

The only dumbbell system that can expand to meet your strength needs, PowerBlock dumbbells are the most versatile and effective exercise tool ever developed for strength training. PowerBlocks work intuitively. Rather than requiring you to buy a room full of dumbbells, PowerBlocks act just like a weight stack at the gym, with a weight handle that fits inside the first weight, which fits inside the second, which fits inside the third, etc. When you want to change weights, you simply move the weight selector pin into the appropriate slot and you're set. As you lift the core, all the weights above the selector pin are lifted at the same time, turning your 3-pound dumbbell into a 6-pound dumbbell, or your 6-pound dumbbell into a 12-pound dumbbell. Not only is the system remarkably easy to use, but it's also cost- and space-efficient, as a single pair of dumbbells can do the work of dozens.

This pair of 45x5 dumbbells, for instance, adjusts from 5 to 45 pounds in 5-pound increments (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 pounds), in effect doing the job of 18 individual weights. Even better, the weights are more compact and balanced than traditional dumbbells, with a padded handle that protects people with weak wrists. Best of all, the free weights are terrific whether you're trying to build muscle mass, firm and tone your physique, or get rid of unwanted body fat. The adjustable set offers a maximum weight of 45 pounds per hand and carries a limited 10-year warranty.

Product Description

This set adjusts from 5-45 lbs in 5 lb increments (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 lbs) in each hand. This set has a maximum weight of 45 lbs per hand. It replaces 9 pair or 18 fixed dumbbells that would have a combined weight of 450 lbs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product. Cheaper and way better than SelectTech, January 24, 2007
By K. Schaub "B-Vila" (Denver, CO USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I purchased the PowerBlock dumbbells after returning the SelectTech dumbbells. The SelectTechs are cumbersome, the weight plates feel loose, and you have to dial two dials to select one weight. Furthermore, they are over $100 more expensive than the PowerBlocks.

On the plus side for the PowerBlocks:
1) They take up very little space for an adjustable dumbbell
2) They feel solid
3) While not cheap, they are much cheaper than the SelectTech dumbbells
4) You can do over the head tricep extensions using both weights or one using the handles on the bottom
5) Selecting the weights is a one step process for each weight
6) They are upgradable with a heavier handle option and a barbell option

On the minus side:
1) Alligning the pins to select the weight is a bit more difficult with the weights on the ground. The stand or a table top would alleviate this problem.

Overall, I'm pleased with the PowerBlocks and definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a quality, adjustable weight dumbbell.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but you need to be careful...., August 31, 2007
In general, I think these dumbbells are great. However, they can be a bit dangerous if you don't do a safety check. For example, if you are not paying attention you can insert the pins at an angle. This creates a possiblity that a plate can come loose and hit you. Also, you can accidentally put the pin mechanism upside down, this creates the possiblity of an accident too.

I like that there is a back up system of an elastic cord and magnets holding the pin mechanism in place. I have found there is only a real danger on certain exercises and only if you don't follow the instructions. Even then the odds are small anything will happen, but it's something I want to warn people about because I have had some near misses.

I find the smaller version of these are better than the larger version. The large version can be cumbersome and a bit long for some exercises. However, I agree with the other reviews you can comfortably do a variety of exercises and the trade-off in terms of a slightly smaller range of motion on some particular exercises isn't a big deal. For example, for upright rows I tend to prefer a short curling bar... ditto for overhead triceps extentions. However, using one dumbbell with two hands is possible and quite comfortable.

This is a solid well made product. I have owned mine for about a year and I think they are great. Over time, there can be an issue with friction between the plates, but I very thin layer of lubricant can help. For most people, this will only have to be done infrequently.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad workout..., July 3, 2007
I bought these dumbbells from a local dealer instead of Amazon because of a sale. I had been looking at the Bowflex select-type of dumbbells as well as these. After trying them out at the store, I was sold. They are easy to manipulate and sturdy in construction. One would think that a square dumbbell would get in the way of doing exercises--this is NOT the case. The handle is in the middle of the box and the side tubes are padded for comfort.

I just finished an hour long dumbbell workout a few minutes ago and it was everything I expected: bench press, military press, bent over rows, seated curls, triceps extensions, dumbbell deadlifts, upright rows, dumbbell squats, etc... All of these exercises were performed using this product. No problems encountered at all.
