2.0 out of 5 stars Fans of the original will enjoy it, August 31, 2005
By Special Ed (Cleveland, OH) - See all my reviews
Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
"Space Invaders Revolution" is pretty much exactly what you would expect for a "budget title". The game features two different versions: "Classic" and "New Age". Classic is just as the name implies- the original "colorized" version of the 1977 video game. The sound effects and visuals are arcade-perfect... which you would expect on a system like the DS. The game plays on the top screen. The touch screen is used for turning an Auto Fire option on or off, or for turning a cross-hair on that is supposed to assist in firing at the UFO's, but it's more of a hindrance than anything.

New Age is nothing more than various "missions", which are variations on the Invaders theme. On some levels, the Invaders disappear momentarily then reappear. While they disappear, they can not be hit. Another mission has a cannon like yours firing from the top of the screen. Yet another features a "giant invader", which consists of various blocks which must be hit in order to defeat it. And each of these take place against a different country's background. While the backgrounds are nice, the Invaders themselves are the same as the ones in Classic mode. The Touch Screen is used for Power Ups which are earned by playing Classic mode... so the whole set-up is kind of confusing.

Fans of the original and fans of retro gaming will probably enjoy this title. I am still on the fence. It's fun, but I keep finding myself going back to Nanostray or the reworked Galaga on PSP's Namco Museum for my shoot-em-up action.

4.0 out of 5 stars If Classic Retro, You Will Like This Game, September 22, 2006
By erobertson (Nashville, TN) - See all my reviews
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
I love this game. Keep in mind though, I am classic retro, as far as gaming goes. I loved this game and played it in arcades, pool halls and pizza joints in the late 70's - early 80's.

First of all, one thing I liked about this game is that you could play the retro version without having to play the newer version and unlocking it unlike some other retro games for DS.

I played the retro version several times before I decided to check out the newer version and was surprised to find out I really liked it also. In that version, you go through different boards with backgrounds in different locations. In the newer version, there is more variety other than so many rows across and so many down. In one of the games, there is one invader you have to hit several times to kill. In another one, there is a hugh invader made up of a lot of blocks and after you hit all the blocks the invader is destroyed. Each location has a different type of puzzle (some are repeats). Each location has three boards to pass. When you have gone to all locations shown, the game tells you "invaders were found in another location". So the game continues. It automatically saves, but you can start over by going to options and clearing all previous information.

So, if you are classic retro, you will probably enjoy this game.

1.0 out of 5 stars Space Invaders for DS too close from the original., March 8, 2007
By LCowboysFAN (DFW Tx USA) - See all my reviews
Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This title is a classic video game coming from the late seventies arcade scene, and the classic version of this DS game is a carbon copy of it, that some of us played in the arcades, or on the Atari, CBS and Mattel early home video game systems. The original version will not be very attractive to the younger generations, so used to good graphics and sound effects, reason why the game makers chose to create a new version of this game in addition, which comes short of being interesting, the challenges being way too limited with not that great artwork, and misuse of the DS stylus, you'll find yourself doing the same things over and over again, which is really boring over time, therefore the life span of this game will be really short for today's kids, only old timers might find an interest in this game, especially in the classic arcade version, overhaul a poor game, way too expensive at 20 bucks for the lack of fun it will provide, I bought it at 9 bucks so it was okay for the nostalgia but not at 20, skip this game, unless you played it on the arcade version back in the days.
