Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The Killers match postpunk guitars with a synthesizer overlay that recalls '80s New Wave without burying their sound in nostalgia. On their debut, Hot Fuss, frontman Brandon Flowers plumbs his imagination for tales of murdered lovers ("Jenny Was a Friend of Mine," "Midnight Show"), voyeurism ("Mr. Brightside"), and sexual confusion (the single "Somebody Told Me"). Flowers and his mates are obviously canny students; the total effect is of a playacted obsession, but one made irresistible by their skillful, catchy songs. If there's an occasional misstep (the painfully earnest line "I got soul but I'm not a soldier" from "All These Things That I've Done"), it seems of a piece with the Killers' influences. As it is, Hot Fuss is one of several recent releases that bring a diverting faux glamour to the mainstream rock scene. --Rickey Wright

4.0 out of 5 stars Intended for those on the fence, September 4, 2005
By Paul Allaer (Cincinnati) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
One year after the Killers' debut album "Hot Fuss" was released, it is now re-released as a "limited edition", with 3 additional tracks that have been available on various singles.

"Hot Fuss Limited Edition" (14 tracks, 56 min.) brings the original 11 tracks first. By now, the first half of the album sounds like a "greatest hits" album, that's how familiar tunes like "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine", "Mr. Brightside", "Smile Like You Mean It" and "Somebody Told Me" now are. But the rest of the album is quite good as well, with tracks like "Andy You're a Star", "Change Your Mind" and "Everything Will Be Alright". The bonus tracks are quite good as well, in particular "Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll" (although the Killers by now are hardly indie). "The Ballad of Michael Valentine" is so-so, but "Under the Gun" is grade A quality and would have fitted nicely onto the album proper.

This re-release is intended to tempt those on the fence that for whatever reason hadn't bought the album yet. Like me. (My 15 yr. daughter had bought it, so I was familiar with the album.) I'm glad that I bought this. If on the other hand you're REALLY into the Killers, your probably have those additional tracks already.

4.0 out of 5 stars Here's the low-down:, August 20, 2005
If you're a Killers fan who already has the Hot Fuss cd in its original form, & you're wondering EXACTLY what the differences here are, here you go:

3 b-sides/non-album tracks have been tacked on to the end of the cd.

"Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll" was a track previously only found on the UK verson of Hot Fuss. "Ballad of Michael Valentine" & "Under The Gun" have appeared on several of the band's import singles. All tracks are good, but "Under The Gun" is exceptional & should have been on the album from the beginning.

"All These Things That I Have Done" is a slightly different mix on this edition. The gospel choir from the mid-section of the song is heard longer near the end, as they accompany Brandon during the "don't you put me on the back-burner..." chorus. Not a huge difference, but it adds some more energy. This is the version that radio stations are now playing.

As for the artwork, the cd booklet is exactly the same with 2 exceptions. Besides the obvious cover photo change (from blue to black), Brandon Flowers' solo picture has mysteriously disappeared in favor of a blank, black page. Perhaps he wants us to forget about that shag haircut he had when the cd first came out?

So there you have it. Those are the only differences, but if you don't already have the 3 bonus tracks, I'd say they're WELL worth the ten bucks that I spent on this. Be sure to check out "Under The Gun"!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Bonus Tracks Found Elsewhere, February 17, 2008
The three bonus tracks,

"Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll"
"The Ballad of Michael Valentine"
"Under the Gun"

are all available on the Killer's 2007 release Sawdust.

If you are looking to buy the Hot Fuss album, buy the Deluxe Tour Edition which comes with a DVD of videos.
