Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The Chicago blues legend's recent divorce is weighing on his mind, if "Somebody's Been Sleeping in My Bed" and "Now You're Gone" are to be believed. That's bad for Buddy Guy, but good for his fans, who, on these contemplative, regretful numbers, get treated to some of Guy's most sweetly improvisational and melodic guitar since his '60s hallmark A Man and the Blues. There's slash 'n' burn, too, as he gunfights with Carlos Santana on "I Put a Spell on You" and squeezes pure heart from his strings teaming with John Mayer on "I've Got Dreams to Remember." Guy also plays prettily and trades vocals with Tracy Chapman on a rote but right "Ain't No Sunshine," although Robert Randolph and Keith Richards are slight on "Lay Lady Lay" and "The Price You Gotta Pay," respectively. Guy hasn't cut this many classics in a while, but he channels enough raw, emotional sensitivity to make the oldies sound like they're pumping fresh blood. --Ted Drozdowski

4.0 out of 5 stars More melodic, less pyrotechnics, January 12, 2006
By John Terry "musiclikerguy" (Kansas City, Mo) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have to admit that I have a fondness for the explosive side of Buddy Guy. When he's locked and loaded, he is a true weapon of mass destruction. That's why it took me awhile to adjust to the soulful, melodic side of Buddy that this album exhibits so beautifully. He's just reminding us that he can play with style and taste in addition to horsepower. If I have a beef with the album, it's the "and friends" concept that's being beaten to death in the music industry. People like John Mayer, Tracy Chapman and Carlos Santana certainly don't bring shame to an album, I just question why they're needed. I guess maybe as a sales booster but people like Carlos and Buddy should be above that by now. They're certainly earned their stripes in my book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prescription Strength Blues, February 25, 2006
This CD should come with a WARNING:
This is prescription strength Chicago Blues and is not for use by those on medication for high blood pressure, heart disease, or if you've recently been shot by the vice-president of the United States.

Transparent platform pumps and stripper pole sold separately. (But recommended)

With a vocal range that would make Al Green turn green, guitar licks that inspired Jimi Hendrix, Clapton, and Page -- this CD is the Chicago legend's crown jewel. He doesn't make any attempt to recap his career here -- he just cranks out funky mo-town rockin blues like he has for 50 years in a 'grab-your baby and hold on tight' groove that doesn't let up from beginning to end.

Turn on the disco ball, break out the leather, the lingerie, the blindfolds and scarves -- and baby take off your clothes but put on this CD first and you will instantly be 20 years younger and 20 pounds lighter and you will blow your man's mind.

Buddy even out-funks himself with 'What Kind of Woman is This' and puts a whole new hue to blue on 'Somebody's Been Sleeping in My Bed'.

I've been playing for 20+ years and when I hear guys like Buddy play I want to play until I die and hope that day never comes. Pay no attention to the nay-sayers and haters... this CD rocks, grooves, swings, sings, and bleeds blue.

Life is good.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Living Legend, February 1, 2006
By mpbcp "mpbcp" (thornwood, ny United States) - See all my reviews
This is an excellent addition to anyone's Buddy Guy collection. Most of the songs are rock solid cover versions of great tunes like "Cheaper To Keep Her" and "On A Saturday Night" and the songs with guest artists show off different sides of this Living Legend's enormous talent. Not a bad song in the bunch. My only minor complaint would be that there is only one original composition by Buddy Guy (that explains the 4 rather than 5 stars), but the guitar solos are explosive and the song selection is wonderfully varied.
