5.0 out of 5 stars The old Sega Sports is back, well, kind of!!!, March 6, 2006
By John M Spangler (Bryan, OH United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Make no mistake, the people bashing this game obviously have never played this game or they simply have something against 2k sports. Seriously, this is the most fun I've had playing a basketball game my whole video game career. And take it from someone who always has loved NBA Live. This year, 2k6 is king.

Remembver Sega Sports? It all got started on the Dreamcast with NFL 2k and NBA 2K. Well, Sega Sports is certainly gone, but the developer (Visual Concepts) moved on and now we have 2K Games. And it's nice to see them back in action.

First things first though, if you have this on the regular XBOX, you may not want to get the 360 version, unless you want to see this in 1080 HD glory. But basically it's the same game as the XBOX one with better graphics. But as a standalone 360 title, it's a very high quality game of hoops and I think it's one of the best games on the system. The gameplay is right on and very in-depth for hardcore fans of the game. The graphics are crisp and very refined and the work put into the player models are well noticed. NBA Live probably has better looking player models, but when you put both games in motion, there is no contest. 2k6 looks like a TNT game live on your TV. I can't believe how real this game looks. The gameplay is very tight and realistic. Realistic stats, good TV style pressentation and the goods to make you very happy throughout your stay with the game. The game is jammed packed with tons of modes. Exhibtion, street ball, 2 on 2, 3 on 3, 4 on 4, and of course the regular NBA 5 on 5.

The best part, online. Online is fantastic. I played about 15 games so far and I didn't notice any lag. I would say it's like your playing your buddy on couch 90% of the time, that's how good and smooth it is online. No offense to NBA Live, but why can't Live play this smooth online 24/7? It just doesn't happen.

NBA 2k6 is the caviar sports game on the 360. Thanks to E.A. truly rushing their titles out, this one really shows how empty E.A.'s games are this year for the 360 launch. I'm sure E.A. will make a comeback for late 06, but until then, NBA 2k6 is the best hoops game to buy for the system. Keep your eyes out for 2k's college hoops too. If this game is any indication on how college hoops will turn out, I'm sure that will be a must buy too. Thank goodness E.A. didn't get the NBA License this year, it would have been a catastrophe not being able to enjoy a game like this. Buy this game now.

4.0 out of 5 stars NBA 2K6 delivers a swish, November 29, 2005

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Visual Concepts has provided an annual basketball game since the Dreamcast in 1999, and since then, they haven't missed a beat. With this long string of success, it's no wonder that they wanted to work hard to optimize their basketball experience on Microsoft's new Xbox 360, and they've done a fantastic job. NBA 2K6 for the Xbox 360 isn't completely new or different from its Xbox and Playstation 2 counterparts, but it's an enhanced version with features that you've got to see on the new console.

The developers spent a large amount of time making the visuals and using them to bring forth the most authentic, realistic NBA experience ever. They hit the nail on the head, and the first time that I saw my starters for the Indiana Pacers run out onto the court, my jaw just dropped. There's Jermaine O'Neal, and you wouldn't mistake him for the next 6"10 hulk. I couldn't miss Ron Artest, and alongside every other player on the team, there's just no mistaking him. It is absolutely unreal what Visual Concepts has done to the NBA 2K6 graphics engine, and the player models are just the first step. The courts are detailed with lights, cheerleaders, mascots, and cheering fans. I've never felt a basketball atmosphere in a video game like this before. I wouldn't be surprised if someone observing a game in NBA 2K6 had it mistaken for a real-life game, especially if they catch a glimpse at the in-game replays.

Of course, graphics are the last thing that make a basketball game worth playing. Visual Concepts ported every last feature from the current-generation version of the game to the Xbox 360 version. The streetball-influenced 24/7 Mode, a mode through which you create a baller and make him into a better player, is back. The Association returns as well, and is your basic Franchise mode. Xbox Live-related features include the new Achievements, Leaderboards, and online mulitplayer. Out of all of these modes, I've enjoyed Association the most, but they're all done well and give you a few different options for how you want to play the game.

The NBA 2K series has always felt a little slower and tight, and NBA 2K6 on the Xbox 360 is no different. There are a few new shooting mechanics that migth have inexperienced basketball gamers scratching their heads. The new Shooting Stick control style is mapped to the right analog stick, and with it, players can take all sorts of different shots to try and get around defenders. Offensively, this Shooting Stick really mixes things up but I found it easier to drive to the basket than anything else. Three-pointers were definitely not my strong point. On defense, the right thumbstick controls blocks and steals. I felt that playing defensively was very exciting, and going for rebounds or loose balls was a rush that felt even more realistic when the graphics were factored in. One thing I did feel that was too common are fouls, both offensively and defensively. The foul shots are handled much differently as well. On the charity stripe, players hold down the thumbstick and release it as the shooter is about to release the ball. This system feels extremely smooth and works well. I hope to see Visual Concepts incorporate this in future editions of the game. This easy system makes free throws a lot more interesting and fun than the timing-based mechanics of the past. Unfortunately, these new control styles aren't very familiar at first and took a bit of time to learn, but once I had them down, I had a great time shooting around opponents and showing them up on the court.

I must applaud Visual Concepts for a job well done on their Xbox 360 basketball debut. NBA 2K6 does have a few flaws, and it's not as easy to pick up as some other basketball games, but once I learned how to play and play well, I couldn't put the game down. Whether you're playing the 24/7 Mode and trying to develop a rising star or you're managing a team in The Association, you should have a great time with this game. Of course, if you've picked it up for other consoles already, you might want to skip on buying the 360 version--but don't skip on trying it or renting it, because you'd really be missing out.

(NOTE: I also have this review posted on GameFreaks365.com, where I write reviews on a regular basis.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Best game on Xbox or Xbox 360, March 18, 2006
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Aftear playing NBA Demo (Live) 2006 I decided that I better give NBA 2k6 a serious look and I realized that 2k6 is still the best game to get.

While it's not truly a next gen effort, it's a great game.

You get 7 modes in which to play: The Association, 24/7: Road to the EBC, Season, Street, Tournament, Practice and Situation.. TH e bestt strenths are The Asso and of course 24/7... Much like NBA 2k4 if you remember that game.

You also get a Cribs mode where you put trophies that you win and unlock games such as Darts and Table Hockey.. It's a neat little addition. Good detail. The options and sliders are pretty much what you have seen in other 2k games... Nothing really new in the options.

On court it's somewhat like NBA 2k4 from Xbox... The graphics are solid, but not as good as NBA Live graphics... The players have that sort of cartoonish look to them.. But no more than the other 2k series games have. The game flows smoothly, so you don't get that robot type of feeling from the game. The post game is ok, but it needs alittle more work. You rarely get defensive calls when posting up and that bugs me. But most people will not even really notice.

The shots look real and the hop step and speed burst can be effective depending on how you use it and who you use it with. If you come down full speed ahead even with a quick guard you might not be able to blow past defenders.. But if you use the turbo at the correct time you can often get good layup/dunks.

Unlike in some other games, you will find that the best players will often take the most shots... So if you play the Rockets, expect Tracy McGrady to fire up alot of shots. The best bet is to play zone defense and just give extra attention to the elite guards because big men will kill you inside if you play too much one on one.

The camera does a decent job of keeping up with the action and the broadcasting is good. You will not be annoyed when the broadcasting gets alittle competetive.. Kenny Smith and Dick Stockton do a great job of keeping it sounding refreashing.

The biggest problem is on defense.. You can't really spead out your arms the manually like you can on other games so you're forced to play more of a team defense instead trying to shut down players one on one. Who knows if this was the way they wanted it or what... But it is what it is.

The computer will keep up if you have the sliders set fairly and you can actually lose some games here and there... Even more so on franchise mode where you have a new practice feature where you work out players to improve the team. Better watch out though.. If you practice too much the players will be tired and the rating will be lowered for the players.. So be sure not to have practice every single off day.

All in all, I'd say it's the jack of all trades almost.. It has good graphics, good modes, good post game, good shots, good broad casting, good franchise mode... But it isn't overly great in one area.. Which I don't mind. I wouldn't want it to be strong in one or two areas and weak everywhere else like NBA Live is.
