Editorial Reviews

The Sunday Times, London

The camerawork on the mountain's north face frequently ignored the advice given to timid climbers - "Never look down".

Product Description

The first filmed ascent of the MATTERHORN NORTH FACE IN WINTER by highly acclaimed adventure film maker Leo Dickinson. Winner of the "Grand Prix" at the Les Diablerets Festival of Alpine Films in 1976.

With its classic outline, awesome outcrops and treacherous slopes, the Matterhorn is an impressive mountain. It commands the respect of every climber. This film follows the fortunes of three mountaineers as they tackle the difficult Matterhorn North Face in the cruel grip of winter. For historical perspective, the tragedy which struck Edward Whymper’s first ascent party is expertly reenacted. The 1975 expedition also has its own epics: Eric Jones was hit by an avalanche and barely manages to hang on precariously near the edge of a precipice. Then one of the worst storms ever recorded in Zermatt strikes the Matterhorn, making climbing appallingly perilous. The climbers have no alternative but to retreat. Battered but not beaten, they launch a second attempt in spite of the bad weather. They climb in the dark while thunderstorms rumble around them. Leo Dickinson brings us remarkable footage of breathtaking photography despite atrocious weather conditions. This film is, without a doubt, a mountaineering classic.

This DVD is region free and can also be played outside the U.S. and Canada.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Matterhorn Climb, May 17, 2007
This dvd gives a great overview of the Matterhorn climb. The north face in winter is amazing. Most people can hope to do the Hornli Ridge in the Summer.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT Movie!, February 18, 2007
For some reason you can't find too much literature or DVD footage on Matterhorn....so I was especially glad to have this piece. It is not a modern documentary but it is expertly shot and during the movie you keep wondering how on Earth could these shots be made in such and exposed terrain and extreme weather.

4.0 out of 5 stars matterhorn - NF in winter, January 14, 2008
I'm very happy about this purchase. If you're familiar with the history, and the poor rock quality (I've only read about), this gives a pretty good accounting of the climb. I'd originally gotten on line to buy the DVD set of 'Everest Beyond the Limit', but I must say that the feature of Amazon that gives you 'customers who viewed this item, also looked at . . . " REALLY was a great utility in this case. Rather than support and shell out money for the tourist show, I found a series of DVDs (Eiger Solo was good too, and Cho Oyu was even better) that were less 'touristy'. This is a combination of historic narration, historic reenactment (nicely done), and a modern day ascent. All very well done, and I'd highly recommend this nature of DVD if you're suffering from from a bit of wanderlust!
