1) Elmers "Ultimate High Performance" is a Polyurethane glue and it's as good as Gorilla (As far as I can tell) but cheaper. also used the PL brand glue and can't tell any notable difference between the three. Have not used Sumo and from what I understand it sets up faster and as a result apparently has a much more limited shelf life (this is generally not a good thing - see item #2)

2) This has a limited shelf life and you probably don't need as much as you think. PU glue foams up and you use a LOT less than other types of glue. 4 oz should be more than enough for most people, 8 oz is a BIG bottle - I can't even imagine buying the 16 oz bottle. PU Glues suck moisture out of the air so unless you plan on using it up within a year or two, a LOT is going to go to waste. Don't ask me how I know this.

3) PU Glue is FANTASTIC for lots of things but woodworking glues are still better for woodworking. They are stronger and you can't clean PU glues up with water the way you can even with the waterproof Titebond products. Also if you use biscuits you will have to moisten them separately to get them to swell.

4) KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN AND ANIMALS! PU glue is waterproof and will swell and harden inside the digestive tract creating a blockage. There is NO antidote and surgery is typically the only solution. There have been MANY cases - just search Google "Dog Gorilla Glue" Wear gloves (rubber or vinyl) and use lots of wax paper.

5) Aliphatic wood glues (Like Titebond II) are still better for wood to wood bonding. Fine Woodworking did a test (Issue #192) and found Polyurethane glues to be about half as strong.

I purchased this versus the other polyurethane glues because it was the right size bottle and less expensive than the others. Getting the right bottle size is important, as any glue you don't use within about a year of breaking the seal just hardens up.

I needed to double-up an eight-foot 2x6 redwood beam without using a lot of fasteners. This glue was the right answer, with one lag bolt at each end. I wedged some boards in as clamps for the first 24 hours, and followed the directions regarding moisture-basically wiping down the twenty-year-old, bone-dry board with water before gluing. Now, a few days later, the two boards make a super-solid post. Polyurethane glue expands, which is good for filling irregular surfaces (like 20-year-old boards), but if looks matter, you will want to scrape off the excess that will squeeze out of the joints before it hardens. And excess glue WILL squeeze out, count on it.

Overall, a good product at a good price.

There's no doubt whatever that this glue is every bit as terrific as other reviewers have indicated. I bought some today, and found that it bonded a broken stone item beautifully, despite taking 4 hours to "set up," i.e. dry. Apparently (so says Mr. Wu) the longer glue takes to dry, the better it holds. I believe him.

My only reservation is the price. I got a 16 ounce bottle for $6 in a neighborhood store, with no shipping---only local sales tax. Elmer's ultimate glue may still be cheaper here than other glues. Just shop around for the best price on this item.

Having said that, it IS great glue.
