Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Eugene Levy is the quintessential milquetoast white guy and Samuel L. Jackson is the definitive badass black dude. The producers of The Man calculated that the collision of their innate racial qualities would produce the kind of comic sparks that Levy and Queen Latifah set off in Bringing Down the House. When ATF agent Derrick Vann (Jackson, Pulp Fiction) learns that his partner is dead and a cache of guns has been stolen, he sets up a sting to get the weapons back. But into the middle of his scheme stumbles Andy Fiddler (Levy, A Mighty Wind, American Pie), a dental supplies salesman from Wisconsin. From there unspools some formulaic buddy-movie pap: Vann gives Fiddler a dose of excitement and Fiddler teaches Vann a little compassion and trust as they improbably track down the bad guys. To a degree, the producers were right--the interplay between Levy's Groucho eyebrows and Jackson's burning scowl provides the only juice this movie has. The Man doesn't deserve actors as talented as Levy and Jackson, but there's no denying they apply themselves diligently and squeeze out a few laughs. --Bret Fetzer

4.0 out of 5 stars Levy, Jackson, and a great overall story=great show!, January 21, 2006
On first appearance, many were shy to give this thing a chance. To many thought "it's just like the other kajillion funny stories out there that just aren't funny".

The fact is, this is really a show that is a little bit of everything. It's got comedy, but really it's got a serious backdrop dealing with some major thugs that an ATF agent (Jackson) is trying to reel in.

The film, as I said, has it's funny moments. Anything with Levy makes us laugh, his overall innocent Leave it to Beaver 1950's personality and outlook capture a large part of any show that he is in.

The chemistry with Jackson and Levy is stupendous. Not very often can you take 2 people cut from different cloth's and combine their character's in a movie and have it work; the man works!

As I will reiterate once more, it's really a very good story that is not just about Levy fumbling and bumbling his way around while a serious cop type tries not to trip over him. Great script and plot, movie rolls along at a good pace giving us time in between laughs to saturate the character development as well as the storyline.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent...., January 19, 2006

This movie, for me, had some lower expectations, but to my surprise...this movie was really, really funny!! Both Eugene Levy and Samel L Jackson did a wonderful job with the material!! This movie had it all...and then some...action, suspense, laughs a million and great direction!! This is the kind of movie that you can just have a good time with. The script flowed really well between all the actors involved, no matter how small of a part that they did or how big. Watch THE MAN, action packed, funny as all get out movie that will have you wanting more!!

4.0 out of 5 stars very funny, February 18, 2006
I never even wanted to see this movie b/c of all the bad reviews I read on it. I just figured it would be stupid. So after I had several people tell me how funny it was I decided to rent it myself. I really enjoyed it! It is not the best movie I have ever seen by far, but it is funny and very entertaining. I have come to find that the movies that have the worst reviews are the ones I end up liking the most. Give this movie a try, you will enjoy it!
