One of the greatest composers of the 20th century, Stravinsky was catapulted into the musical limelight with the composition of three ballets for the Ballet Russes in Paris. Firebird, Petrushka, and The Rite of Spring were reminiscent of the baroque and classical periods and had a strong prediction for clarity and balance. The Rite of Spring caused a celebrated scandal at its first performance and remains one of the best-known and most influential pieces of 20th century music. Stravinsky’s unique style was characterized by the use of repetitive folk-like melodic motives, mixed meters, polyrhythms, and ostinatos. He composed a number of neoclassical works and several religiously-motivated pieces likethe Symphony of Psalms. The influence of his music has been widespread, ranging from Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich to Darius Milhaud, Aaron Copland and many others.

I learned that Stravinsky lived in many places. He had an affair with Coco Chanel. He didn't like others to hear him composing.

Still, this work was quite dull. He lived in a time of moving images, yet all one sees here are photos of him. They show moving images of the places where he lived, but that wasn't enough. The narrator had a boring voice. You can't show this to a high school music class because they'll sleep through it.

Further, the work never says what composition made him famous. It seemed like out of nowhere, he was a celebrity. I wish this had said more about "The Rites of Spring" and the Ballets Russes.
