Review

"Combining Ben Folds' emotive lyrical prowess, the dumb-grinning singability of The New Pornographers and Pet Sounds jaw-slackening harmonies" --Jason Killingsworth (Music Editor / Paste Magazine - Feb/Marc 2006 issue)

About the Artist

Modern Skirts Calling Athens, Georgia home, the members of Modern Skirts - Jay Gulley (guitar/vocals), JoJo Glidewell (guitar/piano/vocals), Phillip Brantley (bass/guitar/vocals) and John Swint (drums) - faced an immediate obstacle when the band started out in early 2004: how to get noticed in such an overpopulated scene. “In Athens, it's almost a joke how many bands there are in this town and how saturated it is,” says Brantley. But Modern Skirts appear to have had little trouble finding its niche, as evidenced most recently by the early buzz from those who've previewed their upcoming debut full-length album, Catalogue of Generous Men, set for release this fall. While future success was hinted at previously by their 2004 EP (This is Winning and Thinking) and live shows, Catalogue of Generous Men ups the ante with track after track of gorgeous harmonies, catchy melodies, and honed song crafting that come together in the form of an exquisite album from start to finish. Produced by Geoff Melkonian (Josh Joplin Band, Five-Eight, The Whigs) during a six-week stint at Go To Your Room studios in Atlanta, Catalogue of Generous Men was further buffed to a fine sheen with the mixing expertise of the legendary John Keane (R.E.M., Widespread Panic, Indigo Girls, Robyn Hitchcock). The release of such a gem doesn't really come as a surprise to many. The band snagged awards for “Best Pop Act” and “Best Up & Coming Band” at the 2004 Flagpole Music Awards, voted on by the readers of Athens' Flagpole Magazine. Then there's the spate of impressive shows that are enough to make any young band drool. Only months after forming, Modern Skirts were selected for the Main Stage at AthFest (Athens, GA) and followed it up with highly-coveted spots on the Best Buy/99X Locals Only stage at Music Midtown (Atlanta) and at the Atlantis Music Conference (Atlanta) a year later. The band also consistently plays shows in its notoriously fickle hometown to over 700 people at the legendary 40 Watt Club. Almost instantly, it seems, Modern Skirts had won over the hearts and ears of Athens… and that's no easy feat. The band admits that the buzz stirring up around them since their recent formation is a bit surprising, but not unsettling. “I think it's more nerve-racking when people don't care what you're doing,” notes Glidewell. “It has surprised me how quickly we've gone from the point where nobody really gives a shit to coming downtown at night and running into people who you don't know saying, 'I love your band.'” Modern Skirts' rapid rise can be attributed to the members' hard work, nice-guy personalities and, of course, the songwriting. Specializing in a brand of pop-rock that infuses Brit-rock elements into a multi-faceted sound, Modern Skirts creates music that's a joy to listen to and will stick with you all day long.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD front to back, September 8, 2006
I bought this CD before a camping trip this summer. The only song I had heard before ordering was "Pasadena" (A great song). Needless to say, the CD was amazing front to back. My girlfriend and I must of listened to it 20 times on our vacation. I recomend this to anybody who thinks they have a good sense of whats good music. These guys are independant musicians also, not owned by some huge label. Help support these guys, buy their music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive! , July 28, 2006
By bsuga1983 "Ben" (Athens, GA) - See all my reviews
This is a very impressive album from a very promising Athens-based band. Great songs with catchy melodies and each band member has impressive chops. Standout tracks include "New York Song," "Seventeen Dirty Magazines," "My Bully," and "My Lost Soprano." Watch out for this band, they are gonna be huge.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Little Disappointing, April 18, 2009
By Redd "SirReddSir" (White Plains, NY) - See all my reviews
"My Lost Soprano" is a terrific song, that I first heard on Pandora. I bought the album soon there after... but that song is really one of a kind on this album. The rest of the music is alright, but not great. Lyrics are often difficult to understand (both because the enunciation isn't great, and they don't seem to make a lot of sense), and kinda goofy.

Not the best album I've ever purchased... I can't listen to it comfortably, but (aside from "My Lost Soprano") there's not much to talk about.
