Private Lessons is one of the top grossing independent films of all time pre-Miramax. Private Lessons was released in 1981, starring Sylvia Kristal, Eric Brown, and Howard Hessman(W. K. R. P. in Cincinnati). Private Lessons was the first in a genre of soft core, teenage, wet dream, pictures.

Originally, based on the novel, Philly by Dan Greenberg. Originally, the story was supposed to be a horror story with a blackmail plot, but when Silvia Kristal was cast the producers decided to turn the story into a sex comedy.

Alan Myerson, Dan Greenberg, and Howard Hessman handle the commentary on the DVD. Generally, they reminisce about what a pain this movie was to make, but generally they say it was a good experience.

I liked this movie, but just to let you know, it has been altered from the version, which is on VHS tape. It has also been revealed that Silvia Kristal had a body double, her name is Judy Helden.

However, Ms. Helden only appears in two scenes in the movie, and they are not the famous scenes which those of us in the 35 to 40 age group, who love the movie all know. Miss Helden's scenes appear towards the end of the movie, where we see aroused nipples on a breast, in one shot of the backside that does not match up with Sylvia Kristal's.

If you are a fan of Sylvia Kristal's, you will like this movie. If you are 35 to 40, and you can remember when this movie was released. You will probably like this movie. I will close this review with a question. Do you want to feel like you are 15 again?

Of all the 80's teen sex comedy movies, this is the one flick That I used to (and probably still do)Prize above all others. Before Porky's, before Weird science, before Stiffler's mom, Before President Ronald Reagan signed a bill making it illegal to feature minors under the age of 18 to be featured in sexual situations on film in the United States, Of all the 80's teen sex comedy Movies, this is the one movie that I used to...Aw hell, I STILL Prize this flick above all other teen movies! Especially LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN (painful ending). Even though I am now 35 (I was 12 when I snuck in to see this film)Never have I ever envied any movie character more than Philly Philmore (Eric Brown). He's rich. He rides in a limo. He gets to see naked, bathe with, date and screw his much older french maid. Even if it's all part of a scam hatched by his gay Chauffer to steal money from his father safe!
Since it's every younger man's fantasy to make it with an older woman and every older woman's fantasy to make it a younger man, you needn't have to be Sigmund Freud to see what makes movies like this so damn popular back in the 80's. But I got to tell you, I never thought that this film was ever going to make it on DVD with it Scandalous, yet amusing subject matter. How the hell they got past that Stripping scene with a 15 year old kid in the room without the moral police busting in I'll never know! What happend to him should absolutely positively happen to you!

Update March 2016: There's a new Blu-ray version coming from Cinema Epoch which promises a brand new transfer from the original 35mm film... so I hope they do a good job and above all THEY BETTER NOT CENSOR IT - although their version wasn't censored on DVD, it just looked awful. Fingers crossed the Blu-ray will do right for this awesome movie, it's been way too long and it's about time it got the quality it deserves!!

I own four versions of Private Lessons, all that are available on Amazon as far as I've seen; and I even watched the Instant Video (SD) version. Here's my review for each:

Private Lessons 1982 MCA VHS tape - seems unaltered from the original movie I remember seeing back in the day, NO CENSORSHIP. The quality is pretty good, an original VHS release. Somewhat grainy as VHS is of course, and 4:3 ratio.

Private Lessons (SD Instant Video - Amazon) - same as above, it's in 4:3 and although it is NOT CENSORED, it's also only about as good as the VHS... so it's lossy in the blacks and fast motion. But being on Amazon Instant Video means much better availability than the old VHS tape... and it won't degrade the more you play it.

Private Lessons 1981 "Special Edition" dvd - released by Cinema Epoch. It contains the original movie and two commentaries. Good news: IT IS NOT CENSORED. Bad news: the transfer is terrible, nowhere near dvd quality and not even very good for VHS. Fills up maybe half the screen, surrounded on all 4 sides by black (at least it's not 4:3). Very, very grainy similar to worn VHS quality and there's also digital rough edges in fast motion (possibly conversion from PAL to NTSC frame rate?).

I first saw Private Lessons (1981) some twenty odd years ago on cable (Skinamax, I think) during my impressionable youth and I don't remember it being as, for lack of a better term, creepy back then as it was while watching again last night. Don't get me wrong, it was nostalgic, quasi erotic, and even funny at times, but watching through the eyes of an adult certainly put it in a different perspective than when I was a young teen. Written by Dan Greenburg (Private School) and directed by Alan Myerson, whose main credits include directing gigs on television shows like The Love Boat, "Dynasty", and "Knight Rider", to name a few, the film stars Eric Brown (They're Playing with Fire, Waxwork) and Skinamax regular Sylvia Kristel (Emmanuelle, The Nude Bomb, Lady Chatterley's Lover). Also appearing Howard Hesseman ("WKRP in Cincinnati", This Is Spinal Tap), Patrick Piccininni, in his only film role to date, and Ed Begley Jr. (Young Doctors in Love, Transylvania 6-5000) in a small but memorable role.

After a pointless sequence of a couple in a car (we hear their voices, but only see a woman's legs sticking out of the car window), we meet Philly (Brown) and his portly friend Sherman (Piccininni), a couple of fifteen year olds spying on Sherman's sister's graduation party. After Sherman's sister falls in the pool and returns to her room to change, the boys proceed to peep through her window, something which Sherman enjoys just a little too much for my tastes considering the girl they're peeping on is supposed to be his sister (and thus begins the creepiness)...anyway, they get busted, blah, blah, blah...
