I don't usually write reviews for CDs that are already out-of-print, but I'm going to make an exception to inform jazz customers of an amazing deal that is currently happening via one of Amazon's Marketplace vendors. The Fantasy label has unfortunately decided to remainder a large number of their Original Jazz Classics CDs, but thankfully Newbury Comics (based in the Boston area) has purchased an enormous selection of these titles, and is offering them at closeout prices. Some of these discs, like "The Young Bloods", are very enjoyable. This session was recorded on November 2, 1956 and features Donald Byrd on trumpet, Phil Woods on alto sax (these two are actually listed as co-leaders), Al Haig on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums. There is nothing extraordinary on this session, as it is a straight ahead blowing session of the period, but it does find all players in top form. Jazz devotees do yourself a favor, if you live in New England, go to a Newbury store and cash in on a once in a lifetime deal. If you live elsewhere, you can always have them shipped -- it'll be worth it.
