Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
Dora the Explorer is off on another adventure. This time, she is teaching children the value of money with her very own talking cash register. It comes to life with pretend shopping trips and bilingual phrases to send kids on their own shopping trip. They can use Dora dollars or even swipe their own Dora credit card. As a real working cash register, it has a credit card tablet for kids to sign their name, just like adults! And to help Dora with her shopping, they can scan bar codes on the price tags or in the adventure book. This toy provides hours of amusement and the children can even act like different customers using the dress-up accessories provided. Kids ages three through eight will have lots of fun as they shop with Dora.

A Shopping Spree with Dora
A scanner and microphone, credit card tablet, and keypad make this cash register life-like and entertaining. Let the shopping begin! First, insert the catalog, scan the barcodes, and add up the total. Then, pay with the play money or swipe the Dora credit card. The scanner can be a bit tricky to use; the arrows on the top of the scanner must be aligned with the arrows printed on the barcodes. In addition, make sure that the scanner is pressed firmly against the barcode. There are 10 different shopping adventures and over 50 items to scan for hours of amusement. And kids can clip the price tags to home items, then by them back. This talking cash register comes with over 25 play pieces and uses four AA batteries (included).

Features
This item won the Hot Toy award in 2006 from Toys R Us. Children love to use the keypad and credit card tablet, but what really appeals to them is the unique barcode scanner. As an educational toy, the cash register speaks English and Spanish phrases, and play money in bright colors teach the youngsters how to budget. Plus, various dress-up accessories foster the child's creative side for hours of amusement. Little explorers learn the value of money with this innovative, award-winning toy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Had to return three times!, November 14, 2006
My daughter loves this toy, but I had to take it back three times to Walmart. First time, it wasn't scanning the items correctly, and the other two times it wouldnt work anymore after I took the tag out of the back by the batteries. I made sure I took the toy out of the box and checked it at the store before I brought it home this time. I'd give it more stars if it wasn't for the trips to the customer service line.

4.0 out of 5 stars Big hit with our 4 year Daughter!, January 12, 2007
From our daughter's perspective this is a huge hit!! She loves talking on the microphone, scanning the tags and paying with the Dora Dollars. She loves that she can put the extra tags on some of her own stuff and then "buy" them.
From a mom's perspective there needs to be a volume control, the scanner needs to work a bit better. Like other reviewers have said it doesn't always scan right. The only way to get it to work good is to lay the tag flat and line up the arrows exactly. Easy for an adult not so easy for a little kid. Also all of the extra pieces are great and add to the fun but there is no place to store them. And yes the crown IS strangely way too small!!
All in all this is a great toy that is a lot of fun to play with and a great way to spark imaginary play.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not at all what I expected, February 6, 2007
By Liz (Buffalo, NY) - See all my reviews
I bought this for Christmas for my 3 year old. She's used it once since then. I took it out today to give it another chance. This product falls short in a lot of ways. If I had known exactly how the register worked before I purchased it, I would have bought something else. If it wasn't too late to return it, I would. There are three ways to play with it: Adventure Play lets you follow along on a page in the book provided. Basically you scan the 3 items on the page, "Dora" tells you the total and that's it. There is no place for the total to be displayed and the register doesn't have a function that let's you input the amount that you are giving to the cashier. Scanner Play allows you to scan items with tags on it. The scanner is very sensitive and more than half the time the wrong items are scanning. Free Play allows you to talk on a microphone that is too short even for my 3 year old. You need to hold down the microphone button while your talking on it and that doesn't work consistently either. There is also a credit card you can swipe and a place where someone can sign their name. You press the Cash button to open the Cash drawer. I'm listening to my 3 and 5 year old girls playing with it now. It's ok, if they are just pressing random buttons and using the extra features, but if they actually want to scan things and get totals, forget it. I am kicking myself for being sucked into the Dora craze and not buying an old fashioned, working register. I just assumed that the register would have a + button and a number display. My $5 calculater has a display for goodness sake! There also aren't enough coins provided to make change with. Save your money, it's not worth it.
