Michel (2003) is a Korean broadcast series, although much of the work was done in Tokyo and Shanghai. Kim, the spunky heroine, has two technical marvels created by her inventor-father: the transforming plane the Honey Bee and the Mirage Gun. She uses them to fight the Black Hammers gang: the brothers Boogy, Woogy, and Meggi, and their boss, Salome. Kim and the Hammers stumble onto the island of Sitel, where the Tree of Life is guarded by assorted fairies under Michel's leadership. The Hammers kidnap the fairies, causing the Tree to wither. If its seed is to germinate, Kim and Michel must free the fairies, on whose magic it depends. Obviously aimed at small children, Michel suggests a mixture of Saint-Exupery's The Little Prince, Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and Pokémon, but without the charm of those antecedents. The overly cute fairies may appeal to very little girls, but their brothers and older siblings will quickly tire of this saccharine series.
