Biography

Rejecting the abrasive guitars of their punk-era contemporaries in favor of lushly romantic synthesizers, Ultravox emerged as one of the primary influences on the British electro-pop movement of the early '80s. Formed in London in 1974, the group -- originally dubbed Ultravox! -- was led by vocalist and keyboardist John Foxx (born Dennis Leigh), whose interest in synths and cutting-edge technology… Read more in Amazon's Ultravox Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Fear in the Western World, September 24, 2006
180 degrees from the mascara wearing, Midge Ure fronted Ultravox, this album is an absolute paranoid masterpiece. Sounds like having a nasty glam hangover in a world gone to sh**. 100% relevant to this day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Striking a match When life is a gas, June 19, 2008
Always loved that line. Although this album was not the full masterpiece like the first Ultravox! album it was always a little cooler because it was never available in the US. But it's really, really close to being as good as the first album. And it comes with "Young Savage" as a bonus track! After all these years it just continues to ROckWrok.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roxy Music meets The Sex Pistols, Debussy meets The Velvets., August 9, 2009
By Misspent Youth (New York, NY) - See all my reviews

John Foxx's Ultravox! (the version of the band with the exclamation point - not to be confused with the watered down Midge Ure version that came later) were masters of melding the visceral energy of punk with the atmospherics of Eno. This album is incredibly special in that way; there isn't another thing out there quite like it. The stark cold feeling within tracks like "The Artificial Life", and "Distant Smile" is SO stark and SO cold that it can only be described as deeply soulful. "Hiroshima Mon Amour" can only be described as a tone poem, not unlike Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun". Haunting.
