3.0 out of 5 stars 4 stars for Monopoly in general, less 1 for the problems with this version., August 16, 2006
By Monika "equestrienne_23" (Davis, California) - See all my reviews
As with the other themed Monopoly games that have come out over the years, the Pirates of the Caribbean version follows the same format and rules as the original Monopoly. Only the "look" of the board and pieces is different. The properties are, of course, locations taken from the first two Pirates of the Caribbean movies. "Chance" and "Community Chest" cards are replaced with "Compass" and "Aztec Gold," but the idea is the same - cards drawn give you either rewards or penalties at random. The playing pieces, in this case, are a treasure chest, canon, monkey, skull, compass, and the famous jailhouse dog, complete with a set of keys dangling from his mouth.

Now, however, I'd like to mention the problems I've noticed with this version of the game. The most glaring issue is that it is clear that the changes made to accomodate the pirate theme were not thoroughly thought out and implemented, leading to several points of confusion. The rules included are still the original Monopoly rules, and refer to Chance and Community Chest rather than Compass and Aztec Gold. Also, it is indicated that houses and hotels are now to be called docks and harbors (but the pieces that represent them, incongruously, are still shaped like houses and hotels, though they are now colored gold and silver) but the rules alternate between calling the pieces by their original and their pirate-themes names. It's even worse on the property cards - both sets of terms appear on each individual card. For instance: "Docks cost $50 each, Harbors $50 plus 4 houses." How could the makers of the game NOT have noticed such a glaring error? These incongruities give the whole game a blatantly sloppy feel. The game pieces, too, are disappointing in craftsmanship. The skull, dog, and monkey in particular have a lumpy, unrefined appearance.

While I love the idea of a pirate-themed Monopoly game, this particular edition, at least, appears to have been hastily thrown together simply for the sake of profitting from the large fan-base the Pirates of the Caribbean movies have drawn. Even beyond the obvious errors cited above, I can think of other changes that could have made the theme feel a bit more complete. Why not actually shape the docks and harbors like little docks? Why not change "Jail" to "Port Royal Prison" or "The Brig"? All in all, Pirates of the Caribbean Monopoly is a great idea, but the product falls short of the mark.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun variation of the traditional game for POTC fans, July 26, 2006
By m3ks (United States) - See all my reviews
This has become the favorite game in the house - the kids can't get enough of it. They enjoy buying property such as Tia Dalma's shack or the Black Pearl.
The only things I would have done different was instead of making it with the traditional Monopoly Jail, I would have put the Port Royal Prison there and instead of the Policeman, perhaps put Commadore Norrington or the Gov. And of course the Free Parking Space should have been Free Docking or something similar.
The pewter pieces are pretty cool as well even though there are no "human" characters.
Definately a must have for POTC fans who also enjoy board games!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for kids and teens, January 9, 2007
The game was a very popular Christmas gift in our home. My 13 year old loves the movies and my 8 year old likes to play Monopoly! The only downside they said is that they wish the game pieces were the characters and not items like a cannon or a treasure chest. My kids collect different Monopoly games -- Lord of the Rings, Sponge Bob, Golf, etc. so this was a great addition to the collection.
