The Basics

• Hard Drive: A welcome size for road warriors, the 100 GB hard drive is definitely above average in size for notebook PCs--great for storing a digital medial library or graphics-intensive presentations--and faster than average at 5400 RPM. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  
• Processor: The intel Core Solo T1300 processor is built with the Mobile Intel 945PM Express chipset, and it has a 2.16 GHz processor speed, super-fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) It delivers enhanced performance for today's demanding applications such as CAD tools, 3D and 2D modeling, video editing, digital music, digital photography and gaming. And Intel's Smart Cache technology enables smarter, more efficient cache and bus design for enhanced performance, responsiveness and power savings.
  
• Memory: The 1 GB of built-in memory (PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM, 2 x 512 MB) is a very good start for power users, and it offers a top-of-class 533 MHz speed. It has two memory slots, enabling you to add a maximum of 4 GB to handle immersive 3D video games, video editing, graphics-intensive presentations, and multiple open business productivity applications.
  
• CD/DVD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x DVD+R DL, 2x DVD-R DL, 4x for both DVD+R/RW, 8x DVD-R, 2x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/10x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
  
• Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 85-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous).

A/V Features
With Toshiba's unique Express Media Player, you can won't have to wait for Windows to boot up before you can start a DVD movie or CD. Just a simple press of the button bypasses the system and starts your media playing.

Screen, Graphics and Sound
The P105-S6004 has a 17-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 128 MB of shared video memory. It also features an integrated audio card with headphone and microphone jacks.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The P105-S6004 has an integrated tri-mode Intel 802.11a/b/g wireless-LAN that enables you to easily connect at wireless hotspots wherever you roam You get a fairly basic offering of connectivity options:

• 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
• 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
• 1 VGA monitor port

Preloaded System and Software
The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. Additionally, it enables you to control your television with the included remote and record and pause programs (much like a DVR--or digital video recorder--such as Tivo or ReplayTV). It's compatible with cable, digital cable, satellite TV and antenna inputs, and it includes an FM tuner. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works, Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, McAfee AntiVirus, InterVideo WinDVD and WinDVD Creator, Sonic Solutions RecordNow.

this is my third toshiba laptop but my first time diving into this solo core technology. i was a bit worried since i rather have others test the new things on the marked instead of me, but after quite a bit of tweaking and deleating garbage that this thing ships with, i'm finally getting the performance that i hoped for.
battery life is very decent, the machine is pretty light, considering the size of the screen and quite slim and 'sexy' as well.
Lovely screen resolution, easy on the eyes.
i love the placement of the three usb ports (the old p100's had two of them in the back which where a pain to reach). firewire on the side as well which is good. and the speakers are way better than my last two toshibas. you can actually listen to something with them....
so, bottom line: i recommend this laptop but i also recommend getting into the operating system (carefully) and disableing lots of the 'features' it ships with if you are planning to use this machine for some serious audio, video, or photo production.

First of all it is a very nice laptop, but Amazon's picture of the unit is misleading. It does not include a remote control. Further the product discription lists the processor as 2.16 Ghz, 1.63 Ghz & 1.66 Ghz. Correct answer is 1.66 Ghz. The screen is sharp and bright. Last thing Amazon doesn't clearly state is that this computer has the mist gray finish on the top lid. The keyboard is closer to a full size desktop keyboard than most smaller laptops. It is packed with more software and features than I can keep straight and the documentation is minimal, it is difficult to determine which features your model has because there is no single listing for this computer and many features are referred to by the software and manuals that arn't on this computer. The most obvious one is the software for Bluetooth in the programs list, Toshiba Assist and in the manual but, there is no hardware.
Lastly, the fingerprint reader. It works well as long as your skin has some moisture. If your fingers are dry use moisturizer before trying to use this function or you may not be able to use your own computer. It is a nice feature for a laptop and not only can prevent someone from using your computer, but you are also able to protect specific files by placing them in your "safe" it also allows you to assign different applications to specific fingers. To start the application you simply run the assigned finger through the reader.
I would have been happy to have given the computer 5 stars (so far) had it not been for the vague product description.

Toshiba has changed the universally used key sizes and/or locations of several of the keys on their 17" laptop keyboards (ie: shift . / ; ' up arrow). Also added a 2nd forward slash key. I would not have bought this laptop had I known about this.
