Like professional wrestling, demolition derbies, and monster truck rallies, the roller derby is a fascinating event, even for those who regard it as the depths of lowbrow entertainment. And the reality series Rollergirls plays on viewers' inherent curiosity in the sport and the women who risk life and limb to do it by exploring their lives on and off the track, with some surprisingly compelling moments. The series focuses on players from the Texas-based TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls, each with their own particular dramas: Sister Mary Jane is contemplating a career move, Cha Cha contends with raising a child, Punky Bruiser struggles to break into stand-up comedy, and Lux wrangles a romantic commitment. The series does a decent job of balancing the personal lives of these tough, tattooed athletes with the no-holds-barred action of the derby, and for those convinced that roller derby "girls" are one-dimensional bruisers cut from the same cloth as wrestlers, there's quite a bit of emotion on display as well, especially in several scenes which cover meetings the league holds for players to discuss their feelings (!). Though perhaps not quite on par with other sports-struggle stories as Hoop Dreams or The Heart of the Game, Rollergirls is an engaging program that wears its heart on its bruised and battered sleeve. Extras include profiles of the players featured on the show, as well as the original casting tapes in which they discuss their lives in greater detail. An "Anatomy of the Bout" and featurettes on derby lingo give newcomers an excellent, if tongue-in-cheek explanation of the (few) rules exist for the game. --Paul Gaita

This series is a lot of fun. Some of the drama may have been contrived, but you can still tell when the girls get mad, or for that matter, drunk. And there's a heck of a lot more personality to these characters than on any other show.

The bouts might even be more intense on film than they are in person, which is saying something.

Spike TV or some other network needs to pick this show up and make new episodes.

Ok so the rest of the world got a little taste of what Austin does best. Austinites got to see the whole thing unfold which is really awesome getting some background on the bouts that we saw and some recap on the ones that we may have missed. For those of you who want more of TXRD action you should check out the website at TXRD.com. You can also order DVD's of the most recent season at www.austin.com. Maybe you can get some sort of an update on whats up in ATX.

I greatly enjoyed the Rollergirls Series, all of these girls are amazing atheletes and the A&E glimpse into the everyday life of being part of a top Roller Derby Team is outstanding. The situations and friendships of each player takes the viewer in and makes you feel like you are part of it even if you've never watched Roller Derby before. If you like live in your face action, drama that takes you in, and some of the most amazing women on wheels then Rollergirls is a must have!
