Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Based on Carl Hiaasen's very cool young-adult novel of the same title, Hoot tells of a teen boy suddenly plunged into the wacky world of endangered species and Florida shenanigans. Jimmy Buffett contributes five new songs to the soundtrack, which isn't all that surprising since he coproduced the movie and his daughter Savannah Jane is credited as music supervisor. The best of his efforts are "Barefootin'," a honky-tonkin' duet with Alan Jackson, and a faithful cover of Warren Zevon¹s classic "Werewolves of London." The balance of the songs on the CD are nicely laid -back, particularly G. Love's "Back of the Bus" and Maroon 5's cover of Bill Withers's "Lovely Day" (Withers contributes background vocals, though this doesn't necessarily play in favor of Maroon 5's singer, Adam Levine). Newcomer Brie Larson (who also costars in the movie) contributes a potential hit with "Coming Around," which sounds like a gushy teen-pop take on Sheryl Crow (yes, it's a compliment). The most exciting track on the CD, however, is Toots and the Maytals' funk-reggae hybrid "Funky Kingston," and it's from 1973. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Product Description
Jimmy Buffett recorded a variety of songs for this CD, including a duet with Allen Jackson of the classic hit "Barefootin," some great covers: Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" and Bruce Cockburn's "Wondering Where The Lions Are," a new version of his own "Floridays" and an original tune "Good Guys Win," written especially for the movie by long time Buffett songwriting partners Coral Reefers, Mac McAnally, and Roger Guth.

Maroon 5, Toots and the Maytals, G Love And Special Sauce and Brie Larson, among others also contribute tracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hoot, April 21, 2006

I am very pleasantly surprised at how much I like this cd. I dont normally even like soundtracks but being a Parrothead, I had to buy it. I love most of the tunes on it and find myself bobbing my head along to "back of the bus". I even like Werewolves of London but I believe it's the first JB remake that I dont like better than the original. All hail Warren Zevon! If you are a PH, I would recommend buying this. It's great summer, backyard bbq, beer drinking music.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very sunny listen..., April 19, 2006
By K. Bortz "fins up!" (Delmont, PA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
for the summer of 2006, courtesy of Jimmy Buffett, the Coral Reefer Band, and some young and old friends. First of all, about half of the CD is made up of Jimmy Buffett tracks (one new composition). "Wondering Where The Lions Are" is a Bruce Cockburn tune that shines under the interpretation by Buffett and the Coral Reefer band, "Barefootin'" is a great duet with Alan Jackson in the spirit of the "License to Chill album", "Floridays" is a cover of...Jimmy Buffett, previously done as an acoustic, wistful tune and now happy, sunny, reggae-filled, and driven by steel drums, and featuring Fingers Taylor on harmonica. "Werewolves of London" is the dud here, and Buffett should never have tried this, as it comes off as bad karaoke.

G. Love does his Philly-driven soul on a track, Toots and the Maytals show up, and one of the stars of the movie (Brie Larson) does here Disney/Nickolodeon teen-pop, and it's not unbearable. But the gem, indeed the true shining moment of the CD is the chamber music, down-beat interpretation of Bill Withers' "Lovely Day" done by Maroon 5. Worth the price of the CD by itself. It takes the Withers song, strips it down, and slows the beat till it is almost reminiscent of the Beach Boys "Warmth of the Sun."

This one will be played on backyard decks across America all through the summer of 2006.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bought for the Buffett, April 19, 2006
By Fairfield Reviewer (Hamilton, OH United States) - See all my reviews
As a die-hard Parrothead I bought the Hoot soundtrack just for the Buffett tracks on it. An interesting mix, great to hear him belting out Werewolves of London and the remake of Floridays is worth the CD itself. Other tracks from Jimmy (Good Guys Win, Barefootin' w/Alan Jackson) are OK, but maybe not worth just purchasing the CD for. Other non-Buffett tracks are an interesting mix of various styles, although if you are a Maroon 5 fan their track will lack some for you. Bottom line--if you love Buffett, make the investment, especially for Floridays. If you are a on-again/off-again fan, it may not be worth your $$$.
