Hardly good, but I think that was the point, July 31, 2008
When "In the Land of the Lost Monsters" was first released, it spawned, from what I can see, some confusion. I wasn't expecting much from this release, and It didn't disappoint me at all, mostly because I wasn't expecting greatness, or music that is merely good.
However though, even though some people love this album, I really feel like Gatsbys' wrote this EP for one reason, to get an excuse to write lyrics so they can give the middle finger to the record companies who opposed them. The whole reason why they were mad at the record companies is for their opposing of their writing style, saying they won't ever make any kind of music because they have no choruses (the story is online in many places), blah blah blah. So I kind of think it's the same premise as Metal Machine Music (though totally different musically, so comments won't be necessary. Even if you write one, your wasting your time anyway). It was made for a reason, but the music that was made along with it isn't all that great.
This is their shortest album, obviously, since it's an EP. The lyrics, you can probably guess, deal with attacking the music industry. The music is quite different at times. You can find two different kinds of faces, harder rock, and some really slow and quiet songs. The faster songs are what you'd expect from Gatsby, varied, new tricks, different sounds and overall, difference (the only thing to expect from Gatsby's are new, cool, interesting music that sounds a lot different). Yes, This Is About You, the shortest song, is to the point, great sing along, who can complain? A Conversation With The Devil is merely good, and it shows some dynamics, though NOWHERE, not even comparable, to anything by the Pixies (These guys aren't anything like the Pixies). The Dragon Of Pendor is quite a raging song, and I like the way it breaks down with some electonica sounds.
The other end of the spectrum, the softer songs, are ambitious for the band, but aren't that mind blowing or awesome. The original version of Badlands is quite beautiful musically, but damn, Nic, tone it the ______ down. It gets REALLY annoying. Ugh. You Stole My Story is a boring that sounds like a prototype to the end of ShhhhH! I'm Listening To Reason, and that's not that great, since that part of THAT song renders this one obsolete. I Smell An Agenda, with it's weepy instruments, sounds pretty good, but that song isn't TOO impressive, either.
The lone song that really doesn't go in with anything is Red, Red, Blue. It's basically a pointless minute song that makes no sense musically, or doesn't sound anything musical or anything worth listening to. Bleh.
Since (Read comment box), you really can't go wrong and check it out. Though it's premise is rather interesting, the music isn't as interesting, and the vocals aren't as great (first time he's ever actually straight out whined). Still, if you like the band, give it a listen.
