Department: Fresh Faces The Sammies: Party On By John Schacht Who the hell are they? North Carolina s the Sammies are a quartet of self-proclaimed country boys whose idea of roots music is more Echo and Iggy than Johnny and Willie. The music is supercharged beer-and-babes rock, but the Sammies draw inspiration from so much of the rock n roll canon they re impossible to pin down. Their party-perfect debut romps through double-time Ramones tempos, spiky post-punk, Stooges tude, AC/DC power riffs, DEVO robot rock, Byrds jangle and early Roxy Music textures. Also known as... Brothers Frank Backgammon (guitars/vox) and Donnie Yale (drums/vox), and bassist Gymmy Thunderbird decided to adopt aliases while attending a Kings of Leon concert (new guitarist Bobby Freedom joined in the summer of 06). It s kind of nice to be able to do the Ziggy Stardust thing, says Backgammon, who even sings with a hint of Bowie. If you re not feeling up to par, it s good to be reminded, You re Frank Backgammon, goddammit, act like it! They're from where? Anson County, North Carolina about 50 miles and 50 years from Charlotte, NC. Album The Sammies (MORISEN) Trivia First paying gig, winter of 2004; two songs on recent Employee of the Month soundtrack; played a show at an Austin, Texas, apartment complex in exchange for week-long room and board before last year s SXSW showcase; Charlotte Observer sports columnist suggested their football-inspired punk anthem, Panther Leap, replace Carolina Panthers fight song. The keys to remaining sane in the van DVD players, iPods, Game Boys and World Poker. All kinds of stuff for fidgety people, says Backgammon, and avoid bringing outsiders, because they add unnecessary drama. First printed in Jan/Feb 2007 --Harp Magazine Jan-Feb Issue, 2007
