Department: Fresh Faces The Sammies: Party On By John Schacht Who the hell are they? North Carolina s the Sammies are a quartet of self-proclaimed country boys whose idea of roots music is more Echo and Iggy than Johnny and Willie. The music is supercharged beer-and-babes rock, but the Sammies draw inspiration from so much of the rock n roll canon they re impossible to pin down. Their party-perfect debut romps through double-time Ramones tempos, spiky post-punk, Stooges tude, AC/DC power riffs, DEVO robot rock, Byrds jangle and early Roxy Music textures. Also known as... Brothers Frank Backgammon (guitars/vox) and Donnie Yale (drums/vox), and bassist Gymmy Thunderbird decided to adopt aliases while attending a Kings of Leon concert (new guitarist Bobby Freedom joined in the summer of 06). It s kind of nice to be able to do the Ziggy Stardust thing, says Backgammon, who even sings with a hint of Bowie. If you re not feeling up to par, it s good to be reminded, You re Frank Backgammon, goddammit, act like it! They're from where? Anson County, North Carolina about 50 miles and 50 years from Charlotte, NC. This CD is a must have, if you love rock, post punk or Music in general. Just get the CD and don't second guess your decision because their really are no "If," "when" or "butts" about owning this baby! Enjoy and review ummm.

It is rare for me to like much less listen over and over to EVERY song on a CD, but the SAMMIES.....they are SMOKIN'. FOR JOHN is a killer tune; for all you Joy Division fans, SHE DIED---some dark stuff there. CARETAKER---another winner; see for yourself---THE SAMMIES HAVE "IT". The CD is much better than any downloads, definitely worth the money.

The Sammies are the kind of group that has existed in the past--was cherished because of originality, great vocals, guitar and bass work-- then disappeared. The Sammies sound is original yet brings back fond memories of that older rock band style. The Sammies have helped fill the void in rock and alternative by bringing their own unique sound, yet also bringing back that older classic sound that seemed to have disappeared, as I mentioned above. This is a group that is going places and do yourself a favor and give them a listen. Some songs hit you the first time (such as Coming Out Wild or Falling Out--the best song on the album in my opinion) and others hit you after multiple listens. There really isn't a bad song on the album or one that you want to skip, which can't be said about most albums. They have a new album coming out September, 2008 and all I can say is go out and get that one and this one. You won't be disappointed.
