Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Recording for forty years now, Rory Block has devoted the entirety of her newest album to the songs of Robert Johnson. This is no mere dalliance or bandwagon jumping for her, as this music has informed her own musical path from the outset, starting with her love of his records when she was just a child. Her subsequent studies of Rev. Gary Davis, Skip James, Mississippi John Hurt and others put her in good stead for understanding the dynamics of one guitar and voice. Like some of those blues masters, Block uses the subtle complexities of fingerpicking combined with occasional slide work to create a whole that has the range of a small combo. What's amazing in hearing these thirteen songs is how fully they became part of the blues lexicon -- not just the individual songs, but their entire bearing. --David Greenberger

5.0 out of 5 stars Ethereal Beauty, July 28, 2006
This is one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. His voice fills the gaps in space -- Solitude -- with a richness that is both untouchable and comforting at the same time. His vulnerability is echoed in the piano on a lyrical journey -- It's Always Been You -- that makes you feel like you're eavesdropping on a very intimate self-discovery. Though their music couldn't be more different, Dybdahl has this depth of musical complexity that reminds me of the best of the late, great Chris Whitley. Both men sing about the things that make us feel the most -- the things that stay with us for our entire lives. NPR compared him with Jeff Buckley, but Buckley is much more delicate and fragile -- like he and his music might disappear at any time (and sadly, they did). There is a solidness to Thomas Dybdahl's music that offers introspective confidence. A Lovestory is my favorite -- the piano and guitar combined with the rich vibrato of his voice and magical lyrics ... well, i'll be listening to this one for a long, long time.
