Guitarist/bassist/songwriter/producer Walter Becker hooked up with his partner Donald Fagen when both were attending Bard College in upstate New York in the late '60s. They became members of Jay and the Americans, then signed a songwriting contract with ABC Records in the early '70s. Its kinda okay

Not much of a replay factor for the album though. Its worth a few spins. "Roll back the meaning" is a good catchy track, like that one a lot

And the lyrics to the album are included with the cd, which is awesome

Has anyone seen the Richard Pryor film this is a soundtrack for?

For what it is (pre Steely Dan soundtrack by Becker and Fagen) its alright. Some bonus tracks would've been nice. Like the 1972 Steely Dan single (in the UK) of Dallas b/w Sail the waterway, which is hard to come across

That single was released before the superb Can't Buy A Thrill. That would have saved this release

I think this soundtrack album is worth checking out. Don't expect too much from it though, because its just a soundtrack. Its not a Steely Dan album, proper

I am one of the biggest "Dan" fans on the planet from way way back. There is a reason this material wasn't released. It sounds like what it is...demo tapes.

Anything from Can't Buy a Thrill on is way better than any of these.

If you are a hardcore, I mean really hardcore, Dan fan this probably is a must have. It doesn't warrant more than one or two listens and it's old hat.
