Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Another of those cut-and-paste comedies from Adam Sandler's production company starring one of Sandler's erstwhile Saturday Night Live colleagues, The Adventures of Joe Dirt finds the magnificently caustic David Spade emasculated by a sentimental script and shapeless, haphazard cutting. Spade plays the title character, a white-trash orphan in search of the parents who abandoned him at the Grand Canyon. The humor is supposed to come from Joe's misadventures, his redneck gullibility, and his encounters with such figures as a serial killer, a wacked-out janitor (Christopher Walken), and a lovable gal (Jamie Pressly) who may, unfortunately, turn out to be his sister. But the squishier requirements of the story, requiring the audience to feel deeply for the pain of Spade's caricature, are an irritant and force Spade to veer from the nastier stuff he does so well. With Kid Rock, Dennis Miller. --Tom Keogh

Product Description

Joe Dirt is a janitor with a mullet hairdo, acid-washed jeans and a dream to find the parents that he lost at the Grand Canyon when he was a belligerent, trailer park-raised eight-year-old. Now, blasting Van Halen in his jacked-up economy car, the irrepressibly optimistic Joe hits the road alone in search of his folks. As his wandering, misguided search takes him from one hilarious misadventure to another, Joe finds his way to Los Angeles, where a shock-jock brings Joe on his radio show to insult him. But as Joes life story unfolds, jeers turn to cheers, and an entire captivated city tunes in to hear the adventures of Joe Dirt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joe Dirt was great!!, August 24, 2001
By Christina Blacklock (Akron, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Joe Dirt (DVD)
Why the fuss about mindless humor? Exactly what is wrong with that? There are plenty of us who after a long stressful day want to sit in an air conditioned movie theater and be mindlessly entertained with stuff we really don't have to think about. Joe Dirt gives this type of entertainment. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against movies that one has to be sharp minded to "get", but once in a while it's nice not to have to think so much. I would recommend Joe Dirt to anyone who is seeking that kind of entertainment. Incidentally, I usually hate David Spade, but I could barely tell that was him underneath the mullet. I can't wait to get it on DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars i dig it, November 22, 2005
This review is from: Joe Dirt (DVD)
Yes, the humor is silly and often intentionally stupid, but I can't help but love it. If it's more cerebral or subtle humor that you want, you will not find it here (beyond the excellent mantra: "life is a garden, dig it," that is). The Joe Dirt experience is all about good laughs from silly jokes, wacky characters and ridiculous situations. Highly recommended for those who like 70's rock, nostalgic hair styles, and anyone who pulls for the underdog. Joe Dirt will give you that, and some gutbusting laughter to boot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Screw Critics, September 19, 2004
By Blake (Oregon) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Joe Dirt (DVD)
The Amazon critic who ripped this movie has forgotten why he loves movies. I don't get critics. They'll give Lost in Translation five stars or two thumbs up or a high-five, but then give Joe Dirt, Police Academy, and other classics two stars and tell us why we shouldn't like popular movies.
Joe Dirt is a fun, entertaining movie that takes us all down 80s memory lane. Most comedies fail to maintain an interesting story, sacrificing overall movie quality for a few laughs. This was not the case in Joe Dirt.
I was never a David Spade fan, but he was perfect for this part. In fact, with the exception of Kid Rock, the casting in this movie was great. It's hard to make a connection between a white-trash drifter and the viewing public, but I think we can all relate to this movie in some way.
