Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk
Quick! Somebody give Smash Hits CPR! Were the legendary pop-mag relic still going The Pipettes would surely be the subject of the double-page pull-out souvenir lyric poster special every other issue, a fresh pose a fortnight. And had Top of the Pops not been sabotaged and sent spinning towards the precipice leaking brake fluid, the candy-floss Brighton trio with a mean kick could easily have been the house band--all the polka dots you could dream of, week in, week out. The Pipettes understand what it is you love about pop music, see. "Dance with me, it will be alright". And the fact that falling in and out of love probably has a little something to do with it. "It’s not love... but it's still a feeling".

After a promising run of singles comes an album dense with sparkle, packed only with potential number ones in any reality that makes sense. It's a glorious scissors 'n' magazine cut 'n' paste collage fantasy of karaoke in Camden bars, '60s girl-groups haircuts, giddy harmonies, string licks like diamond encrusted accessories and passport pictures of past conquests. "Judy" is a witty bittersweet tale of teen identity, like Kenicke with their bootstraps pulled tight by the Shangri-Las, "Your Kisses Are Wasted on Me" is the Go Team trimmed by Phil Spector, and "One Night Stand" is an inverse "I Will Survive", brandishing an unbranded packet of old-fashioned girl power, the other party the victim. Any signs of life from Smash Hits yet? No? Shame, this should have wiped the floor at the Poll Winners' Party. --James Berry

5.0 out of 5 stars so addictive, August 23, 2006
By B. Mills (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Amazing collection of upbeat pop. This album has captured my heart. I HIGHLY recommend this album for pretty much any music enthusiast. It is a very solid debut. All songs are strong with no noticable fillers. My favorites are Tell Me What You Want, It Hurts to See You Dance So Well, Your Kisses are Wasted on Me, Pull Shapes, and A Winter's Sky.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun to listen to, August 22, 2006
By jules (Fort Wayne, Indiana) - See all my reviews
I bought this on a whim in a music store, never having heard of the Pipettes nor having read any of these reviews. What a fun CD to listen to! It will instantly remind you of the 60s female groups, but with updated lyrics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great 60's style pop from the UK, August 8, 2006
By RadioNDN "RadioNDN" (Midwestern USA) - See all my reviews

Well, the title of this review pretty much says it all: Perfect pop songs from a UK band who started out with a string of singles, culiminating in this full length release. My favorite song right now is "Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me," but "We Are The Pipettes," "Dirty Mind" and "Pull Shapes" are pretty great, too. In fact, this whole album is pretty solid. The description of their sound as being like the Go Team produced by Phil Spector is pretty dead on, but I think fans of Belle and Sebastian and Camera Obscura will find plenty to like here, too.

1.0 out of 5 stars cynical retread of 60's girl groups
THe Pipettes are cribbing from the 60's girl group bible but not bringing anything fresh in songs or style. Bananarama redux. Amy Winehouse is better for current retro-pop. Read more
