Lonnie Smith just seems to be able to ignite the Hammond B3 organ like nobody else. Larry Goldings comes close as does Joey DeFrancisco, but Dr. Lonnie is THE MAN! I really loved his older Blue Note recordings as well as his last release: TOO DAMN HOT, and this new one comes in a close second. Great grooves and quite a few jazz based tracks as well. A bit more low key than Too Damn Hot but STILL HOT!!!

The whole concept of jungle soul may feel a bit unusual to old B3 fans, but this CD will be a classic. Two drums, two guitars and the organ, what could go wrong? Nothing, in short. this baby cooks hard. The wildness and greasiness of older B3 styles is stripped down here to its bare, gut-cool essence. That's good, very good. Listening to this over and over will MAKE you cool. Dig into how the rhythms and melody flip up and then flip back over, in a super-low-fi way and you'll start to get into the concept, and start your shoulders, then your neck, then the rest of you twisting and swaying to the jungle soul groove...

This album is better than the Doctor's last effort but still...he doesn't deliver that same emotion that he gives off when playing live. To truly experience this man, this legend (indeed, a legend), you simply need to see him play out. Smith's music is taken in so much better by being there, watching, listening...Live's the word.
