4.0 out of 5 stars Better then the last few for sure, November 9, 2006
By David Mailhot (Montreal, Qc) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Yes this is the 8th entry in the Tony Hawk series. Does it actually do anything new? Yes it does.

New Features: The nail the trick mode is simply the best addition and Im suprised no one has thought of this before now. Also new this version is the bails, which are used for some challenges (bail and break this many bones or bail and rack up this much of a hospital bill). This feels like a copy of Amped 3, but works semi well and adds some new variety to the series. Also new is the classic mode integrated to the story, which is my favorite new feature.

Graphics: The graphics are amazing, specially when you compare it to Tony Hawk American Wasteland. The graphics are smooth and I have not seen any slow down that some reviews have mentionned.

Sounds: The sound is good and the track list is varied and good. Out of 50 some odd tracks I think I knew about 4 bands. In a way I wish they would have thrown in a few more well known bands, but the unknowns (to me anyway) are decent and a few tracks actually made me want to look up the artist.

Character creation: Unlike other reviews (ign for example) I disagree that there are not enough options. You pick from 5 or 6 basic models and each then has options to modify them. There are a few things I would have added, like being able to change my guys hair color for the hair I chose instead of it only adding highlights to the black do or being able to change the shirt under the leather vest I wanted to wear. But over all I think the creation should make most fans happy.

The cons: A lot of reviews have mentionned that create a trick was removed (IMO replaced with the much better nail the trick), create a park mode was also removed...but I never used it. The graffiti portions found in American Wasteland were also removed...but I found that to be boring and a waste of time anyways. My main negative comment to make about this game is that it has some collision detection problems (I've gotten stuck near a wall and had to switch to walking to get away) and the VERY unrealistic bails. It annoys me when I'm trying to get a line or beat a challenge and bail and litterally fly all the way accross the section I'm in...It's a bail, not a superman impression... I really hope they patch the bails to make them more realistic, because currently it's too awkward half the time to be fun, it's unrealistic..it's not even remotly funny at the minute.

Over all: The game is loads of fun (hence the 5 stars). If you are a fan, pick this one up it will remind you of the good old days. I gave this a 4 overall because of the few issues that diluted the game a bit for me. It is still a fun game that you will spend hours playing despite the few problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars This game Nails the Trick . Period., January 31, 2007
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This game has got a lot of negative criticism. I agree with the criticism for THP8, but the good things are good enough to take a look at it.

Pretty predictable plot going here, you're some skater, and you're going for something (this time Project 8), and you have to complete a lot of goals to do it. This part will be familiar (and a little boring) for any Hawk nut. However, the goals THEMSELVES have been changed dramatically. Here's a rundown:

Am,Pro and Sick- Instead of picking a difficulty level to begin with, you are given the chance to get a better rating based on your performance. The good news is that if you are new to the game or you just can't get a particular type of goal down on Sick, you can go back to it when your skills have improved or when your character is better.

Bailing- This part is so funny. The first time I actually flew while I bailed, I was literally laughing so hard I thought I was going to tear my ribs. Think about how I felt whe nI got the "break 15 bones" achievement! Best of all, purposely bailing has actually been integrated into the game (A few goals require you to bail through gates, on a target, etc.). This game's physics are SO horrible, you might end up flying across the entire city on a single bail.

Brand New Classic- Instead of having a classic mode seperate from the story, now Neversoft has seamlessly integrated Classic Mode into the story's goals. The good news and bad news is that you have to do at least some classic goals if you want to get onto Project 8 and beat the game, because Classic impacts a lot on your fictional rank.

Nail the Trick- the crown jewel of Project 8 is Nail the Trick. It allows you to go into a slow motion (a la Max Payne) mode where the movements of the two sticks controls the skaters feet as they maneuver the board. If you really know what you're doing, you can string these together in a combo for huge points. Getting what you usually get in THAW should be no problem with this new feature.

So, there you have it, Tony Hawk's Project 8 is yet another game in the great skateboarding series. They keep getting better every time, and this one is no exception. How long will it be before THP8 finally bails? We will never know.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but Wasteland was Better, June 18, 2007
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
I just got an xbox 360 and this was the first game I got. I've beaten every game in the tony hawk series minus downhill jam. The large world was nice but the list of goals was way too short. Some of the goals are unclear as to what you are supposed to do. I'm not disappointed I bought the game but I was hoping the cutscenes would be better (granted the ones in wasteland had worse animation than the actual gameplay). All the actual video of pros they had in the game was a nice change, and the motion capture looked good. I would have enjoyed it more if there were more goals.

Compared to some of the eariler Tony Hawk games this game is just ok. I really like the THPS series and the T.H.U.G. series better. At $24.99 it was a good buy.
