Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
A lot of movies can be described as "dripping with atmosphere," but in the case of Silent Hill it's literally true. Faithfully adapted from the Konami video games by French director Christophe Gans and Pulp Fiction cowriter Roger Avary (both self-confessed video game addicts), this dark and grisly horror-fest is nothing if not a triumph of cinematography and production design, consisting of a minimal and mostly incoherent plot propped up by a mysterious maze of sets that literally seep, drip, and ooze with the atmospheric evil of past misdeeds. Welcome to the abandoned and perpetually foggy ghost town of Silent Hill, where grey ash falls like snow, a devastating coal-mine fire still burns in a hellish underground, and demons of various shapes and sizes make your worst nightmares seem like a walk in the park. It's here that distressed mother Rose (played by Pitch Black heroine Radha Mitchell) has taken her daughter Sharon (Jodelle Ferland) in hopes of discovering the source of Sharon's sleepwalking nightmares. What they find instead is a burned-out legacy of unspeakable evil, as Silent Hill's dark secrets are revealed. As opposing denizens of Silent Hill's meta-morphing underworld, Canadian actresses Alice Krige and Deborah Kara Unger seem to be the only ones who recognize this morbid mess as campy comedy; Gans (who established his visual flair with The Brotherhood of the Wolf) and Avary take it far too seriously, and the entire movie is utterly devoid of any emotional hooks or plot logic that would make us care about anything that happens. In crafting a loyal big-screen rendition of Silent Hill and its Playstation sequels, they've forgotten that movies play by a different and more demanding set of rules. As a result, they've made an impressive-looking but ultimately hollow horror film that only Silent Hill game-players can truly appreciate. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Movie To Date, August 20, 2006
By Alex Mitchell (Evansville, IN USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As for the statement saying this is a highly profeminist and christian movie... that has got to be the most unitelligent comment ive ever read. Don't let nonsense like that turn you off!!

As many reviews will tell you - this movie is only fully appreciated by the Silent Hill players. I personally only played Silent Hill 4 for a few days and still loved this movie. I even went back for a second time while it was in theatres.
The entire movie's got this atmosphere to it that's haunting -but also very visually stunning and appealing. Call it.. morbid beauty. But aside from that, the acting is great, and the plot plays out with a sense of mystery that leaves you to use your head (that might turn off some people?)
One thing that I like about the Silent Hill movie is that the horror isnt based around killing or gore. Its a kindof horror that leaves you thinking "What the...?" or something along those lines. For any fans of a good, thrilling, dark, scary movie - you'll love this one!! BUY IT!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Silent Hill - More Mystery Movie than Horror, September 8, 2006
By G. Lande "Arjuna_LS" (Rochester Hills, MI USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Silent Hill [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
First with regard to Blu-Ray, I suspect the above reviewer was using an inferior television. The picture was sharp and superb almost to the point of distraction sometimes, but I suppose that's the point of using Blu-Ray.

As for the movie, when I saw it had Radha Mitchell (from Pitch Black) and Sean Bean I knew that this would not be a standard shocker, and I was not disappointed.

The movie throws subtle clues about what's going on to accumulate and fall together at the end for a touching and rewarding 'wow'. This movie stuck with me through the night after I watched it and put all the pieces together neatly with appreciation for the writing as well as the directing and acting.

I'm extremely pleased I waited for this movie to come out on blu-ray before I saw it, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply put. Brilliant., August 22, 2006
By Drake "glassjawslipknot" (N. Logan, UT United States) - See all my reviews
This is the best Game to Movie adaptation yet. This is how they all should be done. I've played the first 2 Silent Hill games. I own all 4, just haven't got the time to play the third or fourth one yet. The first Silent Hill scared the hell out of me. After seeing this movie I went and played the first Silent Hill all the way through again just for kicks. This movie pretty much follows the plot line of the First Silent Hill game with elements of the Second incorperated in.

Things I liked:
1. The camera angles. They took a ton of inspiration from the game, so much so you feel like your playing it, but it isn't annoying.
2. The monsters. All the monstors were real people acting and moving exactly like the game. A lot of time was put into matching the game and it shows. There is some CGI, but for the most part it is real.
3. The Charicters. Alright, the main charicter is alright. But the rest of them were brilliant. From Cybil the cop, Dahlia, Sharon, Crystabella. Some of the best acting I have seen in a long time.
4. The ending. Most people probably hate the ending, but it stayed true to the game. When I beat it the first time I was royally pissed ;)
5. The raining ash. Enough said...just creepy.
6. My second favorite thing about this movie is the Church Siren. It sends chills up and down my spine every single time I hear it.
7. Pyramid Head! Probably the most beloved charicter in Silent Hill.
8. The inclusion of all sets that made Silent Hill truely creepy. The School, the hospital, the church etc... And the attention to detail of all of them...I couldn't believe it.
9. The scene of revenge! Yum. If you have seen it you'll know.
10. Details, Details, Details. Wow. It is creepy how close to the game they actually got, and they hide nothing. Absolutly amazing.
11. The miners. These guys were freaky as hell.
12. The score. The music is brilliant.

Things I didnt like. (There arn't many, but there are some)
1. Hearing Sharon screamed over and over.
2. Some cheesy acting by Sharon, like when her mom shows her the creepy pictures she drew. That was just funny. And the scene in the field. lmfao
3. The Acting by Rose's Husband...My god it was horrible.

That was all I dis-liked. Compared to the good things about this movie, they are miniscule. Go buy this.
