Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Once in a while, the Hollywood marketing machine is made redundant by the viral campaign that develops, seemingly on its own, around a movie. In 2006, such a web phenom surrounded Snakes on a Plane months before its summer release. The movie was cool before it even opened, and that status is reflected on the kind of musicians on its soundtrack. For starters, it's co-released by Decaydance, the label run by Fall Out Boy's bassist Pete Wentz; this isn't a coincidence, as most of the bands involved belong to the same musical universe, including several with a connection to former FOB label Fueled by Ramen (The Academy Is…, Panic! At the Disco, Gym Class Heroes, the Hush Sound). The vibe is happy-go-lucky and exuberant, a feeling bolstered by the fact that while most of the songs aren't original, they've been remixed for extra-oomph by the likes of Tommie Sunshine and Teddybears. Among the few originals are the title track by Cobra Starship (an ad hoc "supergroup" made up of members of The Academy Is…, Gym Class Heroes, and The Sounds) and "Ophidiophobia" by Cee Lo Green, on loan from Gnarls Barkley. Finally, the cool factor is compounded by snippets of movie dialogue between tracks, Tarantino-like. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Bands = Great Album, October 8, 2006
I really like the remixes on this album because I already love the songs by all the bands and it was nice to hear a different sound for them. I was just a little bit disappointed when only 3 of the songs were in the movie (and one of those songs was in the background)! But I think it is amazing and that you should buy it because it is well worth the money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignorance is bliss, August 23, 2006
By J. Henriques (Vermillion, SD USA) - See all my reviews
I have never heard of any of these artists or these songs so no original tracks to compare. Liked all the songs. Also enjoyed the enhanced extras -- they have the music video played during the closing credits of the movie, and my favorite, the short "Early Auditions" video. Dave Coyne does decent impersonations of stars reading for Jackson's role: Walken, Nicholson, Pesci, and Beaker. Poor Beaker, that was pretty good.

2.0 out of 5 stars Meh-not what you expect, August 18, 2006
First I would like to state, that for months now I've been looking forward to this album, with my favorite artists being on this soundtrack- The Academy, Panic!, FOB, The Hush Sound, All-American Rejects, and so on; but maybe this was a bad thing, because the hype I had going into the album was a bit up there...

The first track of the album, is the best, and seems to be one of the only good ones on the album...All of the other tracks, which are amazing as their original version; don't seem to cut it with the remix. Most of the remixes include either a simple effect of a faster speed of the song mixed with some new beats, or a slower version of the song mixed with some new beats...I've got a few DJ programs that I've bought, and I've played around with it for a little bit, and I'm pretty sure I could create the same work as they did...and that's not a compliment..

Not ripping on any of the artists or anything like that, just think that the remixes were done poorly; and this cd isn't a must buy...The original cds for each of these artists though, are must buys...
