Yosemite: Valley of the Giants is another National Park evocation from Mars Lasar, who has been creating music like this for years. His Yanni-esque electro-orchestral compositions, full of sweeping strings, seductive rhythms, and soaring melodies, are perfect for the gift shops at these sites. All he has to do is slap titles like "El Capitan," "Merced River," and "Glacier Point" on his songs and you have an instant memory. Using instrumental samples, Lasar creates an orchestra of sound from strings to flutes and percussion, and he's as good at it as anyone. "Yosemite Valley" is one of the more ominous pieces, opening up with wind and bird cries that evolve into a tribal, vaguely native rhythm topped by gothic voices. "Half Dome" is a triumphant excursion of swelling voices, tribal drums, sampled flute melodies, and, for some reason, Irish uillean pipes--all accompanied by chirping crickets. It's pleasant, but ultimately generic.
