Simoni may be center stage, but the Giro has never lacked characters. Spicing up Simoni's pursuit of power are Marco Pantani, in search of his former cycling self; Simoni's arch-rival Stefano Garzelli; the enigmatic Dario Frigo; and the new face of Eastern European cycling, Yaroslav Popovych. With as many plot twists as an Italian opera, the 2003 Giro is a drama worth watching many times.
