Editorial Reviews

Product Description
The first of two classics by Ultimate Spinach was a different kind of psychedelia; mixing Baroque music with sitars, spatial guitars with Theremin, harmonica & wood flutes within hard rock lines. Some lyrics had a strong influence of the poetry of Kenneth Patchen and the philosophies of Jean-Paul Satre. Here truly was a serious new recording artist, in the middle of a generation in change, during the year 1968. The Alan Lorber produced album, "Ultimate Spinach" sold 110,000 albums in the first week, and remained on the Billboard Top LP charts for 36 consecutive weeks, followed by it's 2nd and last album by Bruce-Douglas, "Behold & See." The spectacular "Ballad of the Hip Death Goddess" has been covered many times and is featured in several new films, including the 2006 Canadian indie "Monkey Warfare".

5.0 out of 5 stars Prime psychedelia, May 13, 2008

(REAL NAME)
When I first got this album in 1968 it totally blew my 17 year old mind. It was just so deep, man. The Hip Death Goddess and Your Head Is Reeling were total green velvet mushrooms in the amethyst igloo of my mind. Or something like that.

There will never be another time in music like the late 60's and although this ain't exactly the Beatles or Dylan it is a mighty fine example of the unique multidimensional sponge muffin of its time.

5.0 out of 5 stars quite a trip, underrated., June 3, 2007
in a quest for good underground psychedelic 60's music, ultimate spinach crossed my path and although internet sources told me of how they were copped out fakes, the sound clips i heard were intruiging nonetheless. it is very good basic late 60's sounding rock with a weird edge to it. nothing innovative or outstanding, but a strong effort and well rounded album. i could best describe it as a mix between the doors and the velvet underground...which are two favorite bands of mine. very trippy and steadily rockin', i really dig it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Spinach (1st album), February 18, 2008
Already some 40 years old, this delightful peace of hippy tosh still elicits fond memories with those who heard it first time round!Made under adverse conditions,(the guitarists were playing up apparently!)this album is a curious mix of styles featuring farfisa organ,feedback-drenched guitars, recorders and vocal harmonies, the best numbers featuring a female vocalist on tracks like the memorable "Ballad of the hip death goddess" (which says it all, really!) "Baroque no.1" is a straight rip-off of Country Joe & the Fish's "Section 43".To be quite honest, unless you had this album originally, there's little to recommend it these days, unless you're replacing your long lost copy or your original vinyl is scratched to smithereens! Sound quality is pretty good considering this is no 24-Bit remaster! Also the sleeve leaves a lot to be desired, as there is no information or liner notes. Ultimate Spinach were and shall remain an odd comic/cosmic footnote in the history of psychedelia, all the more odd that they galvanised themselves to make a sort of classic 2nd album in the guise of "Behold and See" before disappearing into the ether after a mediocre 3rd album. So kick off those sandals, light up a josstick (or something)and try not to crack up too much! Also why do I always get a vision of the hippy teacher in the Beavis&Butthead series whenever I hear the lead male vocalist!
