4.0 out of 5 stars ABOUT TAMPA SUCKS, November 29, 2006
By Gina Vivinetto "GINA VIVINETTO" (st Petersburg, Florida) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Two friends (Helen Popkin, Tom Roe) and I (Gina Vivinetto) got together in the early 1990s and shared the idea that the Tampa Bay area music scene was at the time so vibrant, it should be chronicled. In 1994 we judiciously selected several of the area's most intersting pop, punk hip hop and other musical acts to appear on "Tampa Sucks," which we put together on a shoe string budget and with much help from friends. The title was a parody of an ealieer scene compilation, "Tampa Smokes," which was a nod to Tampa's historic cigar industry. Many of the artists on the album - the bands Home, Pee Shy - went on to sign with cool indie labels. Members of Pee Shy went on to form NYC's populat Caulfield Sisters. All in all, a great compilation of what made the Tampa Bay area so spectacuar before gentrication took away so many of our Bohemian hang-outs.
