Product Description

Product Description

There is nothing more indispensable--even among your most important kitchen tools--than good knives. They are the unmistakable sign of a good chef at work, as only the right sharp knives make for excellent results and are fun to chop, cut, and garnish with. When the Bodum design team studied chefs both in the home and in professional kitchens, we observed that a lot of them actually hold their knives partially along the top of the blade instead of strictly on the handle. We also observed that the common knife can't accommodate different ways of holding it. Our solution: a bolster between the blade and the handle for more comfort and a more accurate grip. This comfortably thick bolster with its concave oval top is a perfect resting place for either forefinger or thumb, depending on the chef's preference and task at hand. The bolster is designed at an angle toward the handle so that the pressure point straight underneath it is actually the end of the blade. This makes for enhanced transmission of energy and a very comfortable working experience. Bodum Chef line knives are handmade of the finest Japanese blade steel--molybdenum/vanadium stainless steel--and are hardened to a Rockwell hardness of 57. The handle is cast in 18/8 stainless chrome steel and has a special die-cast texture for a nonslip grip. Bodum Chef knives should be sharpened regularly and should never be placed in the dishwasher or left in a sink with water. For best results clean them with a damp towel and wipe dry. The five-piece chef's knife set is perfect for someone who is just starting a home or is honing their cooking skills. The set features four of the most important size choices for a knife set--an 8-inch chef's knife (a staple for any kitchen), an 8-inch filleting knife, a 3-inch vegetable knife, and a 9-inch bread knife--in addition to the powerful, space-saving magnet for hanging the knives.

1.0 out of 5 stars you get what you pay for, May 14, 2007
After having spent hundreds of dollars on Global and Shun knives, I thought why not save a little money and get these nice Bodum knives to use once in awhile? After all, I've never been disappointed with Bodum's cups and coffee presses. And actually, I didn't even know Bodum made knives...and for good reason. They're terrible. The knives arrived covered in dusty grease, and even after washing, still looked dirty. The blades are so thick and heavy, they are more suitable for medieval sword fighting than slicing vegetables. Plus they were dull, even after sharpening. And, like a previous reviewer, I also had something rattling inside the hollow handle. Yuck.

1.0 out of 5 stars Low Price For A Reason., May 15, 2007
I had high hopes because of the previous Bodum quality I have experienced. These knives arrived and looked great and that was about it. Unfortunately, they were literally dull when they arrived. My old knives which haven'tbeen sharpened in years cut veggies/meat with less efort. They were also heavy and had an overall bad "feel" in the hand. Maybe for the price you can get them sharpened professionally and hope they hold an edge, otherwise don't bother. I plan to invest on higher quality individual peices I need rather than a set.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good value+ Sturdy Knives, May 14, 2007
This is a good value on good knives. They were not as sharp as I would like and I had to sharpen them before I used them. They are sturdy and feel good in your hand.

These knives, with "Japanese steel" are made in China. And since Japan hasn't made steel for some time, I suspect the steel is also made in China. Read more
