Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Handmade of the finest Japanese blade steel, this nine-piece cutlery set comes with a 10-inch chef's knife, 9-inch bread knife, 7-inch santoku, 6-inch boning knife, 5-inch tomato knife, 5-inch well-rounded utility knife, 6-inch all-purpose knife, and sharpening steel. A 19-3/4-inch-wide space-saving magnet is also included for hanging the cutlery within easy reach. The knives features die-cast textured handles for a nonslip grip, as well as thick bolsters that include a concave oval top for resting the forefinger or thumb, depending on the chef's preference and the task at hand. The comfortably thick bolsters are designed at an angle toward the handle so that the pressure point straight underneath it is actually at the end of the blade. This makes for enhanced transmission of energy and a very easy working experience. The knives should never be placed in the dishwasher or left in a sink with water. For best results, clean with a damp towel and wipe dry. Overall, the chef's knife measures 15-1/4 inches, the bread knife 14-1/2 inches, the santoku 12-3/4 inches, the boning knife 10-3/4 inches, the tomato knife 9 inches, the utility knife 8-3/4 inches, the all-purpose knife 10-1/2 inches, and the sharpening steel 15-1/2 inches. The nine-piece set carries a limited 10-year warranty.

From the Manufacturer

There is nothing more indispensable--even among your most important kitchen tools--than good knives. They are the unmistakable sign of a real chef at work, as only the right sharp knives make for excellent results and are fun to chop, cut, and garnish with. When good chefs work out of somebody else’s kitchen they might even bring their own knives with them. Everyone has their own preferences: some chefs use only an extra-wide chef’s knife and a serrated all-purpose knife, while others like to work with a variety of different knives.

A Bold Idea in New Knives

When our Bodum design team studied chefs both at home and in professional kitchens, they observed that a lot of them actually hold their knives partially along the top edge of the blade instead of strictly on the handle. And we observed that the common knife doesn't accommodate different ways of holding it. Our solution: a bolster between the blade and the handle for more comfort and a more accurate grip. This comfortably thick bolster with its concave oval top is a perfect resting place for either forefinger or thumb, depending on the chef’s preference and the task at hand. The bolster is designed at an angle toward the handle so that the pressure point straight underneath it is actually the end of the blade. This makes for enhanced transmission of energy and a very comfortable working experience.

Great Construction Equals Great Knives

The knives in the Bodum Chef line are handmade of the finest Japanese blade steel--molybdenum/vanadium stainless steel--and are hardened to a Rockwell hardness of 57. The handles are cast in 18/8 stainless chrome steel and have a special die-cast texture for a nonslip grip. These knives should be sharpened regularly and should never be left in a sink with water or placed in the dishwasher--the grinding particles in the dish soap harm the blade's edge. For best results clean with a damp towel and wipe dry.

The Bodum Chef knife line consists of 24 different knives, a sharpening steel, and a carving fork. To sharpen a knife, hold it at an acute angle toward your sharpening steel, and then sharpen both sides of the blade alternately with consistent pressure. Serrated knives don’t need resharpening. With proper care Bodum Chef knives will last a lifetime.

  • Die-cast textured handles allow for a nonslip grip

1.0 out of 5 stars Bodum 5 piece set, April 19, 2007
I rarely write reviews but this product irked me so much I had to write. I bought it for 60.00 on the gold box deal and it arrived yesterday. Either it was used (alot!) or a messed up set that left the factory. Every blade had serious pattern and surface defects. It looked like it was covered in vaseline and left to acquire dust and dirt--but it turned out that it apparently was supposed to look that way. The smudges couldn't be washed off. I returned the product. Maybe I just got a defective set, but Bodum shouldn't put his name on this poor quality. I can't imagine someone paying full retail. Bodum should stick to coffee presses and the like, which I love. Also, this set was made in China. Not pleased.

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst knives I've ever bought -- FRAUD, April 20, 2007
Amazon really needs to put a little quality control into what they sell. Like one of the other reviewers, I bought BODUM knives with a gold box sale and when they came, they were so dull I had trouble cutting and onion. Definitely returning. Don't buy these -- they're worthless.

2.0 out of 5 stars Japanese knives made in China?, April 17, 2007
By Denise "Denise" (Anacortes, WA United States) - See all my reviews
I think claims like these would have gotten the two countries into war in the old, old days.

"Finest Japanese blade steel" on all the knives... but, on the box there is a clear plastic label that says (hold your breath) "Made in China."

I think Amazon should make it clear just where these are from. I think they are good knives... and I bought the five piece set for $60 on the Gold Box deal. No doubt they are worth that much... but, more? I don't know...
