Editorial Reviews

Review

"I recently connected with Illinois based Wil Maring through myspace and the connection has been an unexpected pleasure with the receipt of a copy of her latest CD, The Calling. I believe that I ve found an American treasure; she s that good, both as a writer and as a performer. Through repeated listenings, I haven t found a single track that I wouldn t play on the air; oh, I prefer some tracks over others but this is all good music. The Calling is a fifteen track effort featuring the guitar work and unique, soothing voice of Ms. Maring, with support from Mark Stoffel (mandolin, dobro mandolin, percussion and vocals) and Robert Bowlin (guitar, tenor guitar and fiddle) plus some other fine players, including Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Rob Ickes (dobro), and Dennis Crouch (bass) as additional special guests. Wil Maring could be classified as bluegrass or folk but that wouldn t give you a true picture of her breadth as a writer and performer. What we have here is a case of real Americana the roots music that has evolved from a fusion of bluegrass, folk and acoustic with the vibrant spirit of the indie scene (although perhaps with fewer piercings and tattoos). This is music from the heartland and from the heart. Each song is well crafted with vocals and instrumentation finely tuned, reflecting off each other and blending to become more than the individual parts. From the first track this Album called out to me. Whether singing in Open Road about the hold the road has on a performer s life, doing an excellent cover of Stevie Winwood s Back in the High Life Again, or passionately singing about that sense of history and awe felt by anyone who has purchased an older home or farm in Keeper of the Farm, Wil Maring has captured the essence of each theme. This is an album that anyone even vaguely interested in Americana as a music form must own. Well done Wil Maring, I am officially a fan. Wil Maring s CD, The Calling, can be found on Roan Pony Records. Steve Clarke is the pro --Steve Clarke CHES (101.5 FM) Erin Ontario

5.0 out of 5 stars Wil Maring!, August 22, 2007
For many of us, I'm sure the way we first heard new music was on the radio. AM in the early '60s -- which is how I first heard about a band from Liverpool -- FM in late '60s and into the '70s.

By the '80s, music videos seemed to be the way to find out about new artists. Here we are now in the 21st century, and the internet has certainly leapt to the forefront in getting the words and music out to the people.

Why do I tell you all this, which you probably already know? Because within the last three weeks I have been introduced to a terrific young singer/songwriter by the name of Wil Maring. After posting my MySpace info for the first time, I got a request to add her as a friend, and I checked out her page. She's based in southern Illinois and her music is described as being Americana/bluegrass/folk. It is most definitely "wooden music" as David Crosby once put it.

I have been listening to her latest CD, "The Calling," pretty regularly since I got it a couple of weeks ago. Wil's lyrics are simple, direct and from the heart. When you read the lyrics they are poetry and story-telling all at the same time. The music is joyful, sad, wistful and playful.

All of the songs are brilliant but some of the standouts for me are: The Open Road, Keeper of the Farm, Make You Smile, The Calling, All Gone, You Leave, and Rows.

If you want to learn more about Wil, you can visit her MySpace site or her webpage:

www.wilmaring.com

Give her a listen. I think you'll like what you hear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular music, August 16, 2008
Wil's song-writing is as good as it gets: completely fresh and original, and all her songs strike an emotional chord. Her voice and guitar are perfect complements to her songs, along with her excellent accompanists. I don't usually find myself playing the same CD over and over, day after day, no matter how much I like it. This one is the exception. Wil is a star, and I hope someday everyone knows it.
