It's The Next Best Thing To Actually BEING At A Rick Springfield Concert!, October 26, 2006
***Can a concert DVD review have spoilers? Well, just in case...here's your warning!***
For the die-hard fan, "Live in Rockford" is pretty much a no-brainer, but this live concert DVD has plenty to offer for the more casual fan, too. For me, a fan of 34 years standing, it brought back so many memories of my own concert experiences!
Most rock concerts are fun, but a Rick Springfield concert is not just a regular run-of-the-mill musical concert, it is truly an interactive event! There's no room for jadedness anywhere in the venue. From the start, Rick engages his fans and they in turn reach out to him.
Rick is truly in his element when he is on that stage! Why are his concerts so special, special enough that people travel across the country to go to them? It's the passion he puts into making his music...and you can plainly see that doing them is as much fun for him as it for his fans.
The intro is really interesting with that mix of the didgeridoo and "techno" style music. I dig how Rick starts off the show with the old Easybeats song, "I'll Make You Happy"...and he definitely does deliver what he promised...happy fans!
Throughout the concert, you can hear a variety of songs he has recorded throughout his lengthy career including Jessie's Girl, his signature song! Now I must confess, I didn't sit down through most of the viewing of this DVD. Just like at the concerts, I couldn't resist the temptation of getting up and dancing...
especially during the song I'll Make You Happy!
About the only time I stood still was during his rendition of Red House. I've said it before and I'll say it again...he plays that song like he is channeling the legendary Jimi Hendrix! The first time I saw him perform this song, I was just blown away! I was used to Rick the "power pop" rocker, but Rick the bluesman is just as awesome...and I think that those who dismiss his music as "bubblegum" will be very pleasantly surprised to discover he does play music of substance...and that would include his own composition as well as the cover songs.
There are several opportunities for audience participation in this concert experience. Rick often encourages people to sing the chorus during the song "Don't Talk to Strangers." I got a good laugh hearing that "bashful" cameraman singing the song off-key, and it was cool hearing a fan singing the chorus in Japanese!
Also, it was great fun to see another feature of the concerts which he no longer does: during the song "I Get Excited" he used to have about 10 to 15 females up on the stage, and one lucky girl would get to have the guitar put around her while Rick would play. Alas, this doesn't happen anymore as it just got too dangerous with a few folks being more aggressive than others to be in that hotly contested spot...(and yes you can witness some shoving being done on the stage...shame on those girls!)...
Still, Rick has other exciting ways of safely including the audience in the fun... which he still does at the concerts! Sometimes he goes out into the audiences, "surfs" the crowd, stands up on chairs and serenades one or more fans. Some gals refer to this action as a `lap dance'...and yeah, it's thrilling for those who are the recipients! This sort of thing usually happens usually during his song "Love Somebody" from the 1984 movie "Hard To Hold" just like at this particular concert, but it could take place just about at any point of the concert, too.
You'll want to be sure to pay attention to the mini-"interview" sections dispersed throughout the DVD as Rick talks about why he does some of the things he that he does in concerts such as the "Rose explosion." For the uninitiated, here's an explanation: a "rose explosion" is when Rick takes a dozen roses from various fans in the audience and then "plays" the guitar with those roses. More accurately, he bashes those roses to smithereens against the instrument...and the fans are just awestruck by the colorful display of rose petals floating through the air. Combined with the music and all the energy of the audience, it's a real treat for the senses. After the concerts, some fans even gather petals to save as souvenirs. As far as I know no other rock star does this, and it's one of the reasons why it is so unique and very special. Now this is my favorite part of his concerts! I've personally stood in one of those "rose petal showers" at a concert and it is truly a sight to behold!
Of course, most people went to this concert to see Rick, but the rest of the musicians and background vocalists who comprise the band also contributed greatly to the success of that night's concert: keyboardist Derek Hilland, drummer Rodger Carter, guitarist Matt Bissonette and base guitarist George Bernhardt are outstanding musicians...and they are masters at their respective crafts! There was also a guest saxophonist who was just fantastic...and he fit right in with the rest of the musicians there on that stage.
As much as I enjoyed the music, it was such a thrill to be able to see the extras included on the DVD. I'm now a very happy woman because I got to see Rick sing "I've Been Waiting For A Girl Like You" in a live setting....and about the very moving tribute song "My Father's Chair"...what can I say? That song always makes me cry, and watching it
on this DVD is no exception. The interviews dispersed throughout the concert are also very informative. They give the viewer a very nice and candid retrospective of the ups and downs of Rick Springfield's three decade long career.
I get the feeling that of all the DVDs I own, Live in Rockford is going to be one of my most frequently played. It whets my appetite to go watch him live in concert again...and again...and again...

Technically Disappointed with Live In Rockford, February 6, 2007
This Rick Springfield project would have been better off released as
a music CD rather then a film Dvd. I found the performance / stage
presence of Rick and The Band to be exceptional; but, was very
dis-appointed with the way it was captured / edited for dvd release.
I understand that the camera crew / film editers were trying to give the
project an MTV fast paced fever-pitch quality by constantly changing
camera views; but, they just didn't seem to have a sense of timing in
allowing the cameras to linquer on Springfield for longer periods of
time to capture the visual intensity and emotion that he put into each
song. Camera angles kept changing every other minute giving the
performance a very ragged unprofessional look. I kept wondering if
this was the first time this camera crew had ever gotten together....had
ever shot anything before this concert.
To be fair.... by the end of the concert ( the encore) - it seemed that the
camera crew got tired - allowed the cameras to stay focus'd entirely on
Springfield. I was totally mesmerized - caught up in those songs - !
The back stage interviews with Springfield were done well ! Fun to watch .
Brought back a lot of memories about the way the music scene use to be
in the seventies and eighties. It was a back stage pass to hang out with
a very likable man who just happens to also be a pop star Icon.
- would I advice someone to buy this Cd ? sure . absolutely ! -
-soooo many great songs on this dvd-
you take what you can get if you're a devoted Springfield fan !

Rick Springfield sure has staying power!, November 12, 2006
The dvd captures the spirit, enthusiasm and energy of a live Rick concert. I was thrilled to buy it and watch it over and over! He is clearly still live & kickin', moves around kicking, swirling, spinning, guitar strumming even more than the 80s. Your favs and a few new wonders are in the tracks and the man's gorgeous green eyes show up quite well on screen. It's fun seeing his audience interaction and I highly recommend the cd to fans and non fans alike. Just a fun energetic viewing experience. He got my State of the Heart....
