Louis Malle's journey through India's great city initially appears to be a simple travelogue of everyday sights and sounds; street performers, wrestlers, religious festivals, political rallies and so on. But the film's simplicity is most deceptive. Malle documents minute details of individual lives and situations- poverty forcing Moslem and Hindu to live together; the emotional protests of a former government official who is left unemployed and outcast after contracting leprosy; the building of a skyscraper without modern equipment; rituals of life and death and weaves them into an awesome tapestry. English narration by Louis Malle.
