5.0 out of 5 stars Unlike her other albums..., January 31, 2007
Her first recording is very naked and basic compared to everything that followed. It is mostly traditional folk songs, with a few embellishments from Loreena. She features her harp playing on most (all) of the songs as well as her exquisite voice. As much as I like all of her albums, this is my favourite! So simple and hauntingly beautiful, I wish she would return to this sound every once and a while.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Firm Foundation, October 25, 2007
The liner notes tell us that it was only after Loreena McKennitt had intensively studied and deeply imbibed the Celtic tradition that she felt confident enough to take her own first halting musical steps. Well here they are on Elemental and they are truly more exalted than halting.
My journey through the work of Loreena McKennitt started several years ago with The Book of Secrets and I have since followed her career both backward and forward. I picked this CD up on sale at a favorite Encinitas music store and it has since only added to my enjoyment of her work.
On this, you can hear how her study of Celtic music and lore has paid off. Her voice is angelic, even haunting, and her mastery of the material can only be described as virtuoso. My favorites here are the mesmerizing Stolen Child, the mournful Carrighfergus, and the lush instrumental The Lark In The Clear Air.
Since most of this CD is not McKennitt's own work I give it only four stars though I am tempted to rate it five. Even so, when you listen to Elemental, you will hear that with it she has built a solid foundation upon which her talents can construct the musical wonderland that her oeuvre has become.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for McKennitt Collectors, February 19, 2007

(REAL NAME)
I am a new McKennitt fan but am a devoted one already. Some people might be put off by the fact that this is her first CD, but her beautiful voice and wonderful arrangements are already in place and she has chosen some delightful traditional songs. My favorite is the lovely arrangement of "Carrighfergus" where she is singing background harmony to Cedric Smith's perfect vocals, producing an exquisite rendering of this Irish classic. Another notable one is her original melody and dramatic arrangement of William Blake's "Lullaby". Not a loser in the bunch and oh, so great to see from where she started. You will not be disappointed.

I suspect had Henrey 8th heard Lorenna's version of Greensleeves (he wrote the lyrics), Lorenna would have been his 8th wife. I've always hated that song. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Stunning voice
Very angelic vocals! I just love the Celtic flare! The instrumentals are extremely crisp and the choice of instruments couldn't do more justice to the music.

What a pleasant ride in fantasy the beautiful voice gives. The haunting, almost otherworldly range creates magic.
