The winningest coach in College Basketball history Dean Smith comes to the show with an autobiography. Plain- spoken he is not the most exciting or humorous of guests. A fellow North- Carolinian Charlie Rose seems wholly at home in the Dean Smith world even knowing the name of Smith's assistant coaches. Smith speaks about the good fortune of his career, about his having been fortunate enough to have coached so many outstanding players, including Michael Jordan. Smith speaks of the excitement of college basketball, and how he loved preparing for the games, and being in hard- fought games against worthy opponents. When asked by Charlie rose if he is most proud of his record of wins, Smith says that Coach Wooten had a far better won- lost percentage.
He seems to be a reasonable, no-nonsense person.
All of this is fine. But from this conversation we do not get a real sense of what made Smith such a 'winner'. We do not get a sense of what drove him to be the best. He at times even makes it sound as if winning were something incidental.
So despite the relaxed character of the show it was missing an essential element - a serious probing of what makes Dean Smith- Dean Smith.
