Biography

Papercuts are a soft indie pop project centered around Jason Robert Quever, who was brought up in a commune in Humboldt County, CA. He traveled up and down the West Coast, eventually settling in San Francisco. Quever's work began when he used the apartment of a vacationing friend to record piano tracks for Cass McCombs. He has kept busy since, collaborating with such artists as Casiotone for the… Read more in Amazon's Papercuts Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

There's a persistent gauze throughout Can't Go Back, the second album from the Papercuts, and the light-diffusing effect is gently magical. Jason Quever's the brainchild, voice, and songwriter for the 10 tracks here, sporting a lo-fi yearn and a fascination for the pivot points where post-innocence folk mutates with indie rock. The audio mix is key: acoustic guitars, bass, organ, and drums become a hazy shimmer, so closely entwined that they almost become a single sound as Quever sings in a reverb-soaked, softly high pitch. Quever goes into an indecipherable warble at points on "Found Bird," amid whistles and martial snare-drum accompaniment, but for the most part he's poised frontally with a touch of confessionalism and more than a strong dash of simple, folkie naiveté, right where it crosses paths with lovelorn psychedelia. --Andrew Bartlett

5.0 out of 5 stars soothing 60's sound, July 26, 2008

beautiful and soothing. for me there are at least these stand-out tracks: "Dear employee" and "Sandy". I have played those so many times over, especially helpful during emotionally turbulent times, I'll just leave it at that. soothing to the soul. i was not disappointed by the lo-fi quality, that is what i like about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated for sure, April 29, 2008
Geez, how have I never heard this album before? I caught a snippet of one song scoring a video on Youtube and was instantly intrigued. Bought the album and it hasn't left my CD player (home, car, portable) since. This is some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard, sad and sweet and melancholy. It's all in the melodies. As soon as you hear it, you know.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic album!!!, March 8, 2008
This is some very underrated & folky indie pop. Catchy melodies and great instrumentation. Classic-sounding songwriting, particularly on "John Brown." That song reminds me of Bob Dylan and Mazzy Star.

This band has toured with Grizzly Bear, the Ladybug Transistor, and Beach House and I would say those are all perfectly fitting partners! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ALBUM HERE.

4+ stars. Simple string orchestrations, lots of acoustic guitar, piano & organ but it's the understated electric touches and vocal harmonies that give it a languid,... Read more
