Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The names on this tribute testify to the extraordinarily wide appeal of the Italian film composer Ennio Morricone: not many people could get Bruce Springsteen, Celine Dion, Quincy Jones, Renée Fleming, and Metallica on one disc. And while the artists come from very diverse genres, the album holds together well. Things start off on a syrupy note with Dion's "I Knew I Loved You," a ballad from 1984's Once Upon a Time in America (to which Alan and Marilyn Bergman added lyrics in 2006). But fortunately the CD quickly recovers and goes on to survey most of Morricone's styles, from the dissonance of his spaghetti Western scores to his mod period to his lush orchestral vistas. Metallica goes all out with guitars blazing on "Ecstasy of Gold," a track they've used as a concert intro for years, while Brazil's Daniela Mercury and Eumir Deodato breeze through "Conmigo," and the French-British combo Vanessa and the O's resuscitate the pure '60s pop of "Je Changerai d'Avis," once performed by Françoise Hardy. As for ballads, listen for soprano Renée Fleming, who surpasses her previous pop-crossover attempts on the fragile "Sail Away." Morricone himself couldn't stay away: he wrote interstitial music to create seamless transitions between the tracks, and conducts three instrumental cues. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5.0 out of 5 stars Metallica does justice.. and more., February 23, 2007
By Lom (Odessa, Ukraine) - See all my reviews
Being a very long time 'Tallica fan, I would lie if I said their track wasn't the main reason I've got the album in the first place. However, as any other music lover, I did look forward at other music that could have been interesting. And it does appear on this tribute. Yo-Yo Ma's track was enjoyable, Fleming's track too, so were 3 new tracks Ennio threw in for the additional pleasure.
All in all, the album is interesting because it has a good vibe of appreciation of the maestro. Therefore, I would recommend it to anybody, who knows Ennio's work and to others beyond.

As of Metallica track. It is nothing of a surprise, because the original song is very well known, and the cover is the true Metallica cover. It sounds very fresh, with little nice guitar solo tweaks, it feels like the guys are in their 20's again, it is done with the same 'not-too-serious' attitude as Garage days where done back in 87. It made me feel good, and that's what matters.

It'd be logical if they will play the concert intro themselves for these few Europe shows they have this summer, and I hope to see that happen, since I got the Vienna gig tickets already through the Metclub, hope to get Moscow ones too.

Take care and enjoy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awful, March 7, 2007
By Templar (Scotland) - See all my reviews
Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing the maestro in action with his orchestra will know how his music touches the soul. All this album proves is how special the original soundtracks are and how important it is to leave Mr Morricone's original scores as they are. These "cover versions" don't come close in my opinion and putting words to "Deborahs Theme" from Once Upon A Time in America is a crime in my opinion. If your after the works of Ennio Morricone, get the originals. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars This will DELIGHT Morricone fans!, June 11, 2007
By J. MILLER (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews

Not sure what there is not to love about this disc. The interpretations are unique, sometimes quirky and always interesting; the recording is gorgeous; and Morricone's segues, which he composed and recorded, are very cool and show that much thought and creativity went into the overall production. (Only complaint is the absence of translations for the foreign-language tracks.) After reading some of these reviews, I had doubts about making the purchase. Now I'm so grateful that I did! Highly recommended!
