5.0 out of 5 stars Great cup (and leaking explained), July 19, 2007
By T. Caputo (Somerville, MA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
We were originally drawn to this cup because of the environmental aspect and the fact that children my family knows love theirs'. My daughter has been using traditional plastic cups for years, but my son was having trouble making the transition from bottles. We thought we'd try these for him and get the added benefit of less chemicals.

It was obvious as soon as I opened the package that it was going to leak. The opening in the spout was too large not to. Sure enough, some milk came out when I held the bottle upside down. To my surprise, the flow stopped after only a couple of drops. I realized that they would be no good for my son, but I gave it to my daughter to use and she LOVED it.

Because I was confused that people would make the claim that these bottles do not leak, I did some more research (which I should have done in the first place.) It turns out that BornFree makes Drinking Cups AND Training Cups. What distinguishes the two is the volume of the bottle and the spouts, hard spout for the drinking and soft for the training. I bought a Training Cup. The soft spout has a much smaller opening. When I held a full bottle upside down it did not leak. I gave it to my son and he LOVED it. It is by far his favorite sippy cup. His bottles are going in the recycling bin this weekend.

If you child can be relied on to keep his/her cup upright, the drinking cup is great. If she/he cannot, try to the training cup or get the drinking cup, a package of the soft spout and save the hard ones for when he/she is bigger.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible customer service, LEAKS no matter what they tell you, March 7, 2008
I ordered these cups directly from Born Free back when I found out about BPA (I have since found out that there are safe plastics that you DON'T have to order specially and expensively off the internet. any #5 plastic is safe as long as you're not actually boiling liquids in it). I have had an awful experience with these right from the get-go. Sure, they do say on their website that the training cups (for ages 12 months and younger, according to them) are the leakproof ones. Well, my stained couch would argue with them if it could. I just threw away my last one after a huge grape juice leak all over my tan couch. GRRRR. Why would I throw it away rather than return it to them, you ask? Because when I first ordered the cups, I logically ordered the ones they say are for toddlers, since I have a toddler. Is there a toddler on Earth that puts his cup neatly upright on a solid surface every time he puts it down? I'm not sure these people know any toddlers because the toddler cups not only leak, but they SPEW liquid when they are even tilted. So, I washed the ones I ordered and sent them back to the company with a letter of explanation. I at the very least expected them to call me or send me back letter of explanation, apology, offer of some kind of reimbursement, at least to preserve their reputation. No such thing. After not hearing from them for a month after I sent the cups back, I called. The woman who answered the phone was pretty nice, and she transferred me to her supervisor when I asked for a refund. Her supervisor/manager was curt and pompous with me, explaining that they did not take back used cups and would offer no refund (I spent over $50 on FOUR cups including shipping, by the way). Then she snottily said, "If you want, I'll send you the training cup, which is the one we say on our website that is leakproof. That's all I will offer you.". I accepted that as I was unwilling to argue. This is the cup I just threw in the trash that leaked all over my couch. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY on these cups or any product from this company. There are MUCH less expensive products, from baby bottles to sippy cups that are made from safe plastic, and there are even glass bottles out for babies again. And I'm sure if you had any problems with cups/bottles that you buy from any other manufacturer, they would offer way better customer service. I do not believe in rewarding crappy customer service and snotty attitudes. I for one, am using playtex sippy cups, which are made out of the safe #5 plastic, and cost me about 3 bucks each at my grocery store. Don't fall for the hype.

1.0 out of 5 stars LEAKS LIKE CRAZY...USELESS!, October 15, 2007
By K. Tellegen (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Concerned about chemical leaching I threw out my old sippy cups and stocked up on these.
The drinking spouts leaked all over the place! Born Free customer service replaced my spouts for free with the training spouts. Guess what..? They leaked all over the place too! If the cups get tipped in any direction they will leak. Your toddler will have puddles of milk on their highchair by the end of a meal and you will have a soaked diaper bag (even with lid on) if you carry them in your bag. Don't even think about letting them use them in the car! One throw under the car seat...you'll never get the rotten spilled milk smell out of your car.
I am giving them 1 star for being a Bisphenol-A free product.
Do yourself a favor and save your money (they are expensive!). Buy sippy cups with a #5 rating on the bottom which is the safest plastic for your child and hand wash them.
I'm totally disappointed!
