4.0 out of 5 stars Code: RE-10-A, September 29, 2007
By VegaMan (Volgograd, Russia) - See all my reviews
Interesting compilation of Resident Evil series music.
Contains tracks from Resident Evil (remake), Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, Resident Evil - Code: Veronica, Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil 4.

So begins...

The music from remake is about questions, not answers. Why remake and not original? Why these tracks (short, dark, dramatic and terrifiing only)? What about a little contrast? Where are the calm, melodic piano rolls (like "Meeting Rebecca", "Long Lost Friend", "Save Room" from original)? Or suspense mood tracks ("Ivies' Domain", "Vacant Flat", "Flooded Corridor" like in RE Remix)? Why is this not an option?

Resident Evil 2 shows better test probes than RE remake (I have this OST actually). It's tracks more than partically contains original atmosphere of the title, but... if only it has my own favorites ("The Marshaling Yard (both)" or "The Library" for example)... Nevermind, I like it.

I don't really have the full OST of RE3:N (and don't really care of...) yet..., but it's composition choice is better than nothing and unlike remake part it has "that needed contrast". Good.

I was surprised to find out that the best and the most melodious part of the compilation is RE-C:V, and now I'm even going to buy it's full OST. "Piano Roll", "Lacrymal", "The Suspended Doll", "The Theme of Nosferatu", "Deja Vu" representing this title unexpectedly and totally pierced my mind... :)

RE0 part contains the greatest terrifiing track of all CD - "Training Facility Main Theme" and for only that reason it's already worth my sympathies. Which surely doesn't mean the other tracks are bad cause they're not!

And finally RE4. Just a couple of words - I don't like it... It's tracks are long (1:30-3:46) but mostly empty (that's my own opinion) it appeals to visual context and doesn't sound without it. And it doesn't worthy to fill the lion's share of CD's space. Only the final track - "Sorrow" tries to pull this whole thing up.

In other words, this compilation is still a good sample for you to decide which title's music fits you the best... if you're want more than this of course... ?

That's all... and sorry for my english.

P.S. Nice label (CD), don't you think (which is actually a poster)?

5.0 out of 5 stars Good CD, great atmospheric music that recreates the gaming experience in your head.., April 26, 2008
I am very pleased with this CD. Great atmospheric music that recreates the gaming experience in your head.
You should be familiar with the gameplay and have a memory of your own games at hand, though. As a simple soundtrack CD this may not be the best choise since the game-score is "programmatic" / functional music in the best sense of the word. You want a good score to a horrormovie? Try out the orchestral score of "Hostel".
If you like the RE game you should add this to your collection!

4.0 out of 5 stars Best for diehard fans...., August 24, 2007
By A Pilgrim (San Jose, Ca United States) - See all my reviews
...Such as myself, or perhaps you need samples of very haunting, beautiful, and especially creepy music.

The average length of these musical pieces is about a minute and a half, however, there are a few songs that reach the three minute mark, and some are less than 30 seconds. Whatever the case, you will not get quite the same feeling you would if you were to hear these songs while playing the game, because the game will repeat a song (tastefully) as long as you are in a certain room or area. This almost certainly provides for a more terrifying, and satisfying experience, which is difficult if not impossible to replicate with their short length on this album, and their back to back juxtaposition with other songs, which do not always go well together.

This collection, which is exhaustive for the most part, includes the music from the original Resident Evil video game, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Resident Evil 0, and some, though I am unsure if it is every piece of music, from Resident Evil 4.

In my opinion, there are strong and weak pieces of music from every individual game. My favorites include "Narrow and Close", "Feel the tense" and the "Training Facility Main Theme". These songs are quiet, almost minimalist, and rather atonal. Which lends them a sparse, dark, disturbing sound. I was shocked, and disappointed, to find this soundtrack does not include the "Save room" theme song, which is one of my favorite songs, and is probably one of the most well known, for obvious reasons. And then, there are more typical action songs like "Maximize your survival instinct" and "Final Battle" which tend to have a slightly campy feel. Either way, most songs, even the campy ones, can carry an atonal or dramtic sense of urgency or tension, which is very effective for this sort of video game.

I belive every song is the product of electronic composition (and a bit of voice recordings), which means their composers, such as Makoto Tomozawa, Misao Senbongi, and Shusaku Uchiyama had near complete mastery over their sonic universe, and allowed them to create some very very unique sounds I have never heard anywhere else.

I would recommend this album especially for hardcore fans.If anything, this album will be a pleasant...er...frightening walk down memory lane. Those who are not fans might find much less to appreciate here, since they have not experienced these songs in their original context.
