This is a very cool product. It works great and is very durable. My siblings love it (AND they were arguing with each other over spelling :)

First, I have to express surprise at the previous reviews -- YOU DON'T NEED TWO!!! There is a free PC client. So if you have one and your daughter's friend doesn't have one, the friend can use the free PC client to talk back and forth with the device. My brother used the PC client and my sister used the device -- it's perfect.

Also, I'm not sure what the hubub is about no interface with AIM. The whole point of why we bought this was the secure network -- only preapproved friends can chat with your sister/daughter. If it were compatible wih AIM, I'd have every wierdo on the AIM network messaging my sister. You can't have it both ways. Not being open to AIM is the whole point!!! If you want compatibility with AIM, use AIM.

This is a great device. It really hits the mark for me. If my sister wants to message with a network of friends, it's completely secure. Sure, she has to get her friends' permission off line first. But that's the whole point. A little bit of work up front, and a completely secure result. I haven't found that in any other product. It's brilliant, actually.

This is a great product. It's not an open-network client like AIM -- it's better and SAFER than that. It's not a two-device-required product -- it's flexible, one or many. It's a very cool product and my sister loves it.

I bought this product as a Christmas present for my 9-year-old brother and sister, and they still haven't stopped playing with the devices. They even recruited a few friends around the block to join in - responding to a comment made earlier, I'm pretty sure not all of these neighborhood kids have devices, so I'm positive the PC clients works well. Regardless, the IM Me's are simple to use - my bother and sister even set them up largely on their own. I can't say enough about the educational value. I'm big believer in encouraging young minds to take advantage of technology (I wish I was encouraged as a child), and both my bother and sister are proving increasing savvy with the help of the IM Me. They're all set for the future.

The kicker for me was security. I must say I'm a bit of a traditionalist, so the ability to set up a fixed group of chatting partners is vastly preferable to the open IM programs where you never know who's going to contact a child.

The bottom line is that the device is a great piece of technology, providing the longest interactive experience my bother and sister have had in a long time (and sturdy... both devices have been dropped a few times already and still work great). I might even buy one for myself so they can communicate with me at a distance... I can join the fun!

I got this device for my computer-hogging 12 yr old and she loves it! I feel safe knowing that she will be using this product in a much safer environment - I have watched way too may episodes of "To Catch a Predator" on MSNBC. So if you are like me and want to keep your children from becoming a target of computer sex predators, IM ME is the perfect solution! Your kids will love you for getting them a cool new toy too :)
