3.0 out of 5 stars Play Occasionally and Play Soft?, July 9, 2007
By Stephen Saunders (DICKSON, ACT Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: A Lily for the Spectre (Audio CD)
Karen Peris of The Innocence Mission contributes the only non-original to Dosen's second album and thereby hangs a tale. Peris does earnest, somewhat religious, and fondly optimistic, songs that can be sharp and memorable too. Dosen finds the serious and optimistic more often than the memorable. Maybe one should just skate over lines like "I'm just an owl in the dark" and "When I was young I had a dark heart inside of me". Or put them down to experience.
Producer Simon Raymonde contributes apt bass and electric guitar lines to accompany Dosen's warm vocals and acoustic guitar. He slightly overplays the strings and backup vocals on these mid-tempo and slow ballads.
Next time around, Dosen's talent could use a firmer hand in the lyrics and production departments. If necessary, do more covers. It's no offence.
